Bambridge is following up on his list of Savanites in the Missing Shekel, when Envoy arrives in disquise to witness 'illegal activities'. The Shiga gets into an altercation with a Rhian, while the Aeolun is accosted by a group of pirates. Bambridge successfully deals with his problem, and buys Corpselicker, the slave responsible for dealing with the bodies the Missing Shekel generates. Envoy leaves the group of pirates, only to be attacked at the door by a Kavi, a Khatta and a Skreek. Her confused responses to their taunts worsen the situation. The Kavi breaks the Aeolun's hand while Bambridge manages to purchase her from his two companions. Bambridge takes the Exile to a nearby healer, and discovers that Chiri has a long history with Envoy, one that involves her frequent insanities. The Aeolun's broken hand is treated while the Shiga signs with Little Reed. Everything is interrupted by the return of Corpselicker, with the Zelak that has been pursuing Bambridge for three months. Everyone is subsequently arrested.
