On board the Merryweather, Willow summons Burr, and then tells him about her strange dream in which she made a deal with Dagh. Burr discovers Whitehead listening at the door, and Willow makes sure the rat didn't hear anything important. Burr then goes to fetch Testament-Blaze. Willow asks Testament-Blaze about what he was signing in the courtroom, and she apologizes to him for getting a favor from Dagh to free him. Testament-Blaze, not familiar with Sinai theology, doesn't grasp the full meaning of this. Before they can continue, however, they are interrupted by the arrival of the blind mutt, Copy, who warns them of a doublecross by Suprier le Chien.
The warning comes a bit too late, however, as the ship is attacked, and the ship's envelope is damaged by arrows. The crew fights off boarders, but suffers many casualties. The ship lifts off, pursued by another airship stolen by the Gallahs … but not before Willow fires off a dagger at Suprier le Chien, and wounds him. In the air, a storm erupts, and Willow tries a desperate gambit, by firing her iron-tipped staff at the other ship in hopes of it serving as a lightning rod. After two fumbled attempts, she fires the bolt, but it's not possible to see just where it went. Regardless, lightning strikes the other ship, removing the pursuers.
The ship, minus its captain, heads on, bound for Olympia … but doomed not to make it quite there, at the rate it is leaking gases.
