Kani takes a group of Temple Scouts out to the countryside for them to earn their Tracking badges. He takes Gartuk to track down a volunteer first. Gartuk, the little Jupani, manages to tree the volunteer, a certain foppish Fox. The Fox ends up falling out of the tree, being caught by Kani. The rest of the Scouts show up, pouncing the foppish Fox, showing "initiative" that only adds to Kani's weariness. At last, with the prospect of getting cookies distracting the rest of the cubs, Kani manages to get in a couple of questions to Pouncer about her parents, but gets nothing other than a profession that Zoltan is Pouncer's "papa", and she starts babbling and crying when Kani presses further. Kani, not keen on interrogating a cub, resigns himself to just taking Pouncer back to the others for now.
