Once back at the castle, Alptraum finds himself on his own except for Mave. The two chat about Alptraum's visit to his family, and about the role of consorts in a court (versus lovers, who have it easier).

Alptraum also wants to know if he can do anything for Mave. The Yodhinala suggests he change his colors to match those of a Barinala – and have Kaira play bath attendant to them. She thinks it will be good practice for Alptraum in learning to be more assertive with women.

They also make plans to practice more with magic.
