Starting the same evening that Brishen returns from the Temple, the young ambassador calls together her eight Savanite slaves and informs them of what is happening – and that she plans to help them to escape to the City of Hands rather than turning them over to the Temple.

The next day, Brishen meets secretly with Envoy, and makes arrangements for the slaves to escape, though Envoy refuses to tell Brishen just how she's going to accomplish this feat without any of the guards seeing.

Three days after the meeting at the Temple, some Temple Guards come for the Savanite slaves. When they go down to the basement, they find that the slaves are gone. Brishen puts on an act of being utterly surprised. One of the wolves finds a note that reads, "Thanks for the snacks. You're next. – Amaranth." Brishen then breaks down in tears, wailing that the tombs are full of monsters. The Guards try to search for the missing cheetahs, but to no avail – They're gone.
