Francisco the five-tailed kitsune departs from the house of Avram the Zolk Merchant, after having saved the fennec's daughter, Raishe. Entering into the Bazaar, he spies Eustace do Varr again – the poodle who sent him into the sewers under the premise of going through a "maze" for one or two gold coins. Francisco confronts Eustace, but is warned off by Eustace's bodyguards. When Francisco refuses to let go of Eustace, it appears that violence may result … but there is an "accident" as a "blind man" runs into Francisco and knocks him into a conveniently-passing cart. The cart whisks Francisco away, and it is revealed that Avram (and his son, pushing the cart) have intervened to help their new friend. Avram tells Francisco of Eustace's unfair ways – and that the merchants of the Bazaar feel helpless to do anything about it
