Kaela spends some time with her mother, Abana, in the garden at the larger Mikide Estate. Toward sundown, Envoy arrives (briefly impersonating a certain Inquisitor with her mimicry), and speaks with Kaela about plans to go to the City of Hands. Their talk is interrupted, though, when it becomes evident that Abana has gone missing … alone with Jezebel and at least a couple of servants. Some phantoms distract the lupine guards, further making it evident that shadow magic is at work here. Janus arrives during the confusion, having been sent by Azhtar in a rush to make sure that Abana and Kaela are safe … but evidently too late. Inside, Kaela confronts Titus, threatening to reveal that he has been harboring a spellcaster. She then tries to get Envoy to fly to the Temple to seek help, but when Envoy refuses, Kaela flees in tears, as Zoltan arrives, after having gotten word from the Guild that Envoy had come to the Estate. Zoltan lets Envoy know about Boghaz' expedition to the Savan. As Envoy rushes outside to find Kaela, Zoltan wanders into the Trophy Room … and discovers the other crystal hands taken from the City of Hands. Meanwhile, in the garden, Kaela discovers a phantasmal image of Jezebel which gloats and brags about her plans, but is dispelled when Kaela crushes the candle it is bound to. Janus and Envoy crash into the garden, Janus recognizing Jezebel as Third-Eye the shamaness who sold him into slavery. Kaela angrily marches off for town, with Envoy and Janus in tow, and she tries to seek help from Inquisitor Melchizedek, and learns that there is trouble in the Temple as well, as Azhtar has been accused of theft, and is now on the run. Finally, our heroes end up on the Freedom's Dream, making a hasty departure from Rephidim, bound for the Savan.
