Axel and Gunther are picked up by a hay wagon and stashed inside, held in place by the otter girls Nene and Bebe, along with boxes of Gunther's crossbows and ammunition.

After a bit, the wagon lurches as if it just lost a wheel, and everyone is dumped out into a secret tunnel that was dug next to road. They get ushered out into a permanent tunnel and the old one is collapsed behind them. They're brought to a second, tighter tunnel and squeezed through into the town Armory bunker, and then the blocks are mortared back into the wall – all of this just to make sure nobody could have seen them entering.

Axel discovers an allergy to iron, which is in abundance here, and Gunther is his usual grumpy self when told he's going to pretend to be his wounded brother in a ruse to trap the necromancer. He and Axel are then locked into a room with the two otters.
