1 Feb 98: Citizens seek Justice, and other information at the Temple

The Bazaar
In the bright mid-day, the air is cool and crisp and full of the sounds – and smells – of a bustling street lined on each side with booths, vendors and customers – some loudly haggling over prices of the displayed wares. Occasionally a Zelak patrol wanders by to keep the peace and to keep a lookout for those with sticky fingers … and, to be sure, there are plenty shady sorts lurking in the shadows, regarding the passersby with hungry eyes. Or perhaps that's just a peddler over there, begging for a scrap of bread. In any case, it's a barrage on the senses – exciting and exhilarating, full of life and action.

Meandering through the crowds of the bazaar is a Lapi. But this cute little bunny is on a mission; he wants to know who his new employer is. He is also curious about his new cohort, Kensington.

He has had little luck for most of the day. Most inquiries on K'ale have been met with blank stares. The same goes for most inquiries into Kensington, except for a few that replied invariably with "Har har har!"

Aaron gives up on questioning civilians, and heads for the nearest Guard Patrol. They must keep records on this sort of thing, after all!

The nearest guard patrol seems to be a pair of Zelaks, watching the chaos of the Bazaar with indifference.

The rabbit goes up to the nearest of the Zelaks, and asks, "I need to speak to a Guard, where is the nearest one?"

The Zelak clacks, and buzzes in a monotone, "Nearest guard is presently this one."

Aaron blinks, then asks, "Err… well, can you tell me if there is a list of wanted criminals somewhere?"

The Zelak's answer is curt, "Wanted criminals can be found in the outstanding warrant listing, Hall of Justice. Such records available on written request."

"Written request? How long does it take to get the listing?" Aaron asks. "I only need to check two names… "

The two Zelaks begin moving in synchronization, apparently towards their next watch post. The one speaking continues as they move, "Individual records can be obtained through the Bureau of Civilian Records."

The Lapi trots alongside the Zelaks, asking, "And where is the Bureau of Civilian Records? Where do bounty hunters get their information?"

The Zelaks continue until they have a view down a different aisle of the Bazaar, and stop as suddenly as they started. "Further inquiries of this nature may be made at the Bureau of Civilian Records. Location is Temple building 54-A."

"54-A, got it!" The rabbit pats the Zelak on the shoulder, "Thanks!"

The Zelak monotonously clacks, "Physical contact with an officer is a punishable offense. Please do not repeat."

Aaron backs away from the insect, "Err, right. Got it." Then he dashes off towards the Temple.

There's a little bit more noise coming from one portion of the bazaar than usual as a high-spirited Korv shoulders his way through it. "Stand aside, comin' through! Whoops, 'scuse me, lass, looks like ye backed into me wing there! Har, har… hoy, anyone seen a provisioner's tent?!"

The white-and-black Lapi jogs right past the noisy Korv's beak.

Kensington caws at a stall keeper, "'Ey, I thought Gragor's Salted Fish were 'ere just yesterday! Now yer sayin' its way over-… awk?" He watches a suspiciously familiar blur go trotting off into the crowd. {If I didn't know better… } The Korv begins pushing his way in the direction the Lapi went.

A Jupani gruffs indignantly as the Korv pushes past, "Ey, you watch self! No shove!"

Aaron pauses at the Clock Tower to get his bearings. {I hate how this place keeps changing. The Temple should be… THAT way!}

The avian clacks his beak at the Jupani. "Then stay outta me way, lubber!" Ignoring the wolf, he peers around through the crowd, then grumbles, and begins looking for a relatively clear spot to spread his wings.

The Lapi brushes back his black ear, and mutters, "Or should it be the other direction?"

After checking the direction the shadows are falling, Aaron heads off at a slower pace towards the Temple.

The Korv catches up with the Lapi as the crowd thins slightly in response to his aggressive movement.

The corsair finally gets a fix on Aaron, but doesn't say anything, simply narrowing his eyes. {Hmmm… I were in a good mood this mornin', too. Wonder what 'e's up to.} He waits for the crowd to thin some more, and then launches himself into the air, stirring some dust and errant feathers.

Aaron continues to make his way towards the edge of the Bazaar, trying his best not to be jostled, hawked at, or otherwise delayed by the crowds and merchants.

A black blotch circles around overhead, mixing up with the couriers and eeee…

The Lapi eventually weaves his way through the crowds and alleys and drunken layabouts to reach the Temple. He slows down to look for building 54-A, unaware of the dark shape overhead.

Aaron asks one of the entrance Guards, "Excuse me, but could you direct me to building 54-A, the Bureau of Civilian Records?"

The guard, a young Jupani, bounces slightly at the question, looking quite eager to help someone, "Yes! Oh, yah, building 54-A! Right here, right now, aye!" He gestures grandly at the rather squat, nondescript building behind him.

Smiling, the Lapi thanks the Guard and commends him on his helpfulness, then heads for the entrance to building 54-A.

The Jupani grins as he blocks the passage, still quite friendly, "Hoi! You no can unescorted just walk in! You wait, I ring." He clangs a bell by the door rather loudly, then waits.

Aaron blinks at the delay, but waits beside the enthusiastic guard.

A small Rath'ani male comes out of the building, looking tired and bored. "Yes, may I help you?"

The rabbit leans forward and asks, "I hope so! I'm trying to find a list of wanted criminals or those that might have bounties on their heads."

The Rath'ani nods, "Okay, you want Justice, they carry a listing of currently wanted criminals."

"Where do I go to find Justice?" the Lapi asks… straight-faced.

The Rath'ani leans tiredly against the doorframe, "Main temple grounds, wing 5. Ask to read the current outstanding warrants. Is that all?"

Aaron brushes back his ear again and thinks. "Will they tell me what to do if I know the whereabouts of a wanted criminal?"

With a shake of the head, the Rath'ani says, "No, for information on specific criminals, you need to come here."

The Lapi blinks, then asks, "So if I know the names, I can just ask you now then?"

The Rath'ani nods, "Yes, this is where the records for individuals are kept."

Aaron smiles and stands up straight before asking, "Well, in that case I'd like to see the records for a Kavi named K'ale and a Korv named Kensington… out of Chronotopia."

The Rath'ani nods, "Come inside, please." He turns and enters the building.

Aaron waves to the Guard and follows the raccoon into the records building.

The guard waves cheerily back! The building's interior is dark, and the Rath'ani shows the Lapi to a large, ornate desk, stacked high with papers. There is a scholarly-looking Khatta behind the desk who looks up, "Yes?"

Smiling to the Khatta, Aaron asks, "I'm looking for the records on a Kavi named K'ale and a Chronotopian Korv named Kensington."

The Khatta nods, "Okay, I'll need to see your clearance writ, and a form of identification, please."

Aaron begins reaching for his own identification papers, then pause. "Clearance writ? Where do I get one of those?"

The Khatta frowns, "You don't have one? You need one to access personal files. You can obtain one from the Courthouse, if you can present them with a need."

The Lapi scratches at the side of his head, then asks, "What constitutes a need? Does suspicion of criminal activities count as one?"

The Khatta lifts a monocle to one eye, as he glances at a sheet in front of him, "You need to register the suspected criminal and their crime at the Courthouse. An outstanding warrant is sufficient for one, as well. The temple will keep the logs of both claimant and suspect on file for exactly one year."

"So if there is a warrant out, that's all I need?" Aaron asks. Apparently he'll have to go to Justice afterall…

The Khatta nods, "Yes, that would be sufficient."

The Khatta continues, "If you use the secondary route, an investigation will most likely be conducted into both you and the suspect."

"Okay," Aaron says, "I'll go check with Justice then. Thank you for your time." The Lapi makes a polite bow to the Khatta.

The Khatta grunts, and bends back over his paperwork. The Rath'ani walks forward, "I'll show you to the door, sir." He leads the Lapi back out into the sunlight, where they are greeted by the guard.

Aaron smiles to the Jupani, "Hello again. Do you know how I can find Wing 5 in the Main Temple?"

The Jupani nods, "Yah, yah, goes through courtyard behind building here! Finds pathway, take left. That take you to main Temple way. You follow path around right side of Temple, long time, see doorway." He sticks his tongue out, as he thinks hard, finally coming up with, "Stuff written above door!"

A confused looking cougaress Khattha wanders out of one passage, and up to the guard. She adjusts an eyepatch over her left eye, and keeps staring at a piece of paper, "Yeesh! You woule thinks they lay things out betterr… .hnn… wherre is Wing 5?"

"Sasta!" Aaron squeals, then loudly clears his throat as if he had something stuck in it. "What brings you to the Temple?" he asks in a slightly deeper voice.

"Aarron?" Sasta looks up suddenly at the Lapi, one hand halted halfway to an empty place on her belt, "Oh, I rregisterring as a Bounty Hunterr yaa? I been rrun all overr the place so farr."

Both of the Lapi's ears straighten up on hearing that. "Well, I was just going over to Wing 5 myself. Would you like an escort?" He smiles hopefully.

"Surre, you show Sasta wherre to go. Naybe I k'n gets out of herre beforre sun sets." She folds up the piece of paper and shoves it into a pouch on her belt.

Aaron beams! "Of course! I believe we just follow that path over there… "

Blunt talons click on stone as a black mass off feathers sidles up the hallways. "Ahoy there, Sasta," rasps the Korv, who pauses to sneer at Aaron. "I finished pricein' some blades fer ye. I see ye found th' clerk already."

"Yaa, I fine hin, but still no k'n fine the rrights eeparrtnent. Back hone it was just wearring a scarrf, herre it sone kine of trreasurre hunt." The cougaress replies, waving Kensington to follow.

Aaron makes a show of looking indignant at the Korv… an effect that is somewhat spoiled when his black ear flops over his face again.

Kensington struts to Sasta's side, his head bobbing. "Aye, this place be a rabbit-warren o' papers an' halls. Can't feel the breeze, can't fly free! Bah!" He cocks his head to eye Aaron. "An' what're you doin', skulkin' around here, Lapi?"

"I'm hardly skulking," Aaron protests, "but then you'd be the expert on that, no doubt. I'm escorting Sasta to the Justice Wing so she can get her Bounty Hunter license." The rabbit watches to see how the Korv reacts to the news.

The corsair's abrasive cackling echoes down the corridor, and the bird slaps Aaron's shoulder with one wing. "Hah, aye! She's been makin' a shiny shekel on baggin' bounties fer some time, so's I hear! Are ye plannin' on gettin' yer hunter's license too, long-ears? Kah, hah, hah!"

A Savanite with an armload of papers hustles past the group with barely a glance up.

Regaining his balance after the slap, Aaron retorts, "Well, maybe I am!"

The Korv's laughter runs itself out, but he still looks rather bemused. "A soft-padded runt like ye? Quit pullin' me tailfeathers."

The Lapi harrumphs, "Well, I've probably been through more real life-threatening situations than you have. You might do well against drunken dockhands, but I'd like to see you face down a charging Bromthen Hog."

Sasta stalks along with the other two, giving an idle glance after the slave, "Nuch farrtherr Aarron?"

"I ain't wearin' pigstickers, so's I don't be fightin' barnyard critters." snorts the bird. He tilts his head casually to glance over at Sasta. "Maybe ye should come wid' us to buy blades, Aaron, ye could listen in on some fighter's chat. We 'ad plenny o' time t'be chattin' about swordplay last night, eh Sasta?" Kensington clucks his tongue once or twice.

Aaron checks the signs at the next intersection, "Almost there."

"I do okay without weapons," the Lapi remarks.

Kensington stifles some sniggering. "Oh, yer a bare-knuckler, eh? Maybe ye should gimme a coupla pointers sometime. *Snort*" The Korv looks around at the endless maze. "Are ye steerin' us right, cottontail? I thoughts we already passed that tunnel. Guh, th' ceilin's so low, I bet I could peck it if I stood on tip-toe."

Aaron smirks and takes the lead, "What's the matter Captain, can't read the signs?"

A large open door with the inscription 'HALL OF JUSTICE' over it gives a pretty solid clue that they have arrived at the right place. Inside, there is a high desk by the wall, with a Vartan behind it, scowling as he scribbles something down out of sight with a gaudy quill pen.

Aaron steps aside and motions for Sasta to go ahead before him to the desk.

"Thanks," the cougaress gives the Lapi a pet on the head, and steps up to the high desk. She holds up her papers, and calls out loudly, "Hiyas! I wants liscense, herre ny forrns."

At the mention of papers and forms, the corsair makes a face. "I'll catch ye again before we go to the Lanyard, Sasta. I 'aggled a chitin short sword down ta 660 shekels, or ye can get some fine daggers fer the same. I'll pool me share o' the money, I'd rather 'ave the sword'n'dagger by me side than the change in my pocket."

The Vartan looks down, and his feathers puff out in annoyance. He reaches down for the forms, and glances at them briefly, then says, "Room 12. Left fork, goes in door on right."

Aaron hides his grin at the Korv's discomfort, and waits for his turn at the desk.

Sasta stares up at the Vartan for a few more moments, "Yeesh, this neverr enes." She nods to Kensington, stepping away from the desk, "Well, if you k'n gets two short sworres, that woule be best, but I will settle forr sone long eaggerrs."

The Vartan hands back the papers, then scowls down at the rest of the group, "Wants something too?" His look almost makes one think that the temple has a special hostility training program.

"I'll be seein' what I can come up wit', luv." rasps the avian, grinning. He takes a moment to admire Sasta's retreating form, then turns to thumb his beak at the Vartan. "Bah, keep yer feathers on, I be goin'… " With that, he struts from the room, and is on his way. Some snickering, and the words, "Lapi bounty-hunter" can be heard in the halls.

Aaron ignores the Korv and asks the Vartan, "I would like to see a listing of wanted criminals if may, sir."

"Room 17. Out, two lefts, third door. Next." The scowling hippogryph waves the Lapi on his way and frowns grimly at the next supplicant.
