Middle Infirmary
Whereas higher-ranking officers are entitled to use a spacious, well lit hospital section of the Temple where their recuperation is done with fancily cooked meals, lower officials must be contented with the very efficient but rather antiseptic infirmary that serves their needs, more a large cargo hold divided by thin dividers into wards and operating rooms than a purpose-built part of the original Temple. Fluorescent lights flicker on and off, as temperamental as most equipment around here, and the moans of some of the patients echo through the walls.
The remainder of the trip to Gallis was fairly disturbing, especially with the added burden of wounds sustained from the imps to deal with, but once the lands of insanity were left behind, the airship journey to Rephidim was practically trouble-free, even to the point of boredom. The sight of a great floating rock island and the experience of actually LANDING on it were definitely worth the trip, but things have calmed down now, as the young human Baddock was admitted into a Temple infirmary almost immediately upon his arrival … and maybe, just maybe, he'll finally get to check out and go on his way, since the wounds seem to be healing nicely enough.
Sesus points discretely at Baddock and seems to ask a physician something, as he is being helped with a bandage around his left arm. He nods to himself and gets up from the chair he was sitting on, nodding again to the doctor as he informs him of the medication he just got. He looks a little tired, like he has heard it before. Wincing a little, he grabs his left arm and holds it to himself as he walks over to the young human.
Baddock lies in the cot, staring up at the ceiling. The sounds of the infirmary fade into the background as his mind wanders. He quietly ponders the events of the past few weeks.
As Sesus gets over he grabs a chair and gently lifts it, gritting his teeth, over to the side of Baddock's cot. He asks, "Mind if I sit down a while?" again grabbing his left arm as he pushes the chair into position with one foot.
Baddock's visitor appears to be a Jupani in Templar robes, though just what rank he holds is impossible to discern, with the human's lack of experience with the Temple.
The wolf wears a great white cloak, and, for the most part, only his muzzle is clearly visible from underneath his shadowy cowl.
Sesus's voice snaps Baddock out of his daydreaming, as the young boy turns his head to see who's come. Sitting up in his cot, he smiles. "Sure, go ahead."
Sesus bows gently and sits down, making himself comfortable, leaning back and putting his arm in his lap. He asks, "I am not disturbing, am I?" turning to Baddock, with no actual concern in his voice.
Baddock shakes his head. "Nah, not at all." He scoots up a bit in the cot and lets his feet dangle off of the side. "Hi, my name's Baddock Shen." He smiles and offers the Jupani a hand to shake.
Sesus leans over and extends a paw to Baddock, a little hesitantly. He says, "I am Sesus." He takes a deep sniff and asks, "How are you feeling?"
Baddock shakes hands with Sesus. "Nice to meet ya," he says, brushing some hair out of his face. "I'm doing okay. Better, anyways."
Gritting his teeth at the firm handshake, Sesus pulls his hand back as soon as he can. He nods and smiles to Baddock, moving the hand about a little as he puts it back to the armrest of his chair. He says, "I heard you just came backfrom Bosch. Seems like you ended up in a little too much trouble over there."
Baddock chuckles lightheartedly. "Aah, it wasn't so bad. I'm still alive, aren't I?" He tries to scratch an itch underneath his bandages, but doesn't seem to have much luck. "Besides, someone had to teach those guys a lesson. Y'can't just go around beating up on people."
Sesus says, "I have heard about some kind of mishap, on the… " He goes silent for a little while and says, a little insecurely, "Pilgrims' Road? With the wards."
A white-furred Exile pauses at the open end of Baddock's recovery space, and clears her throat. "Uh, pardon me, Investigator? If it's not a bad moment, I need to give the patient some new medication."
Scooting back a bit on the cot and crossing his legs, Baddock nods. "Yeah, a bunch of those talisman things were missing. I thought maybe those guys me an' Searle fought took them, but I don't really know for sure."
Looking up, Sesus, the Investigator, says, "By all means." He then turns away a little, looking like he is admiring some of the architecture.
Baddock looks up at the Exile. "Oh, hey," he quietly says with a smile.
Envoy smiles to the human as she enters the space, keeping her wings folded tight against her back to avoid disturbing the curtains. "I just need to give you a few things as part of a … preventative treatment." She kneels down beside the cot and gives Baddock a little cup filled with a blue liquid. "Could you drink this, please?" she asks, giving her best smile, which causes the skin around the base of her horn to wrinkle.
Baddock holds the cup in his hand and sniffs curiously. "What's this stuff?" he asks, peering at the contents of the cup.
"Just some nasty tasting medicine," the Exile explains. "Because of certain recent incidents, the Temple is making sure to test anyone who has come into contact with supernatural or necroplasmic entities."
"Oh." Baddock nods. He holds his breath, tips his head back and quickly drains all of the liquid from the cup. Almost gagging from the taste, he coughs and hands the empty cup back to the Exile.
Waiting until the Aeolun seems finished with her business, Sesus raises a finger and asks, "Excuse me, madam. Could you do me a favor?"
Envoy accepts the cup, and notes the boy's reaction, then turns to the Investigator. "Yes, sir?"
Baddock wipes his mouth off on his arm and looks up at Sesus.
Sesus asks, "Do you know if anyone by the name of Searle … " He side-glances at Baddock to see if he got it right. "… has been administered care here? Or at any others of our facilities? And how he is faring. He is a courier of ours."
"Why yes," Envoy says, smiling. "He was treated earlier for his wounds and released after being examined for parasites and demons."
Baddock turns to Envoy and smiles. "Searle's okay?"
Sesus nods and says, "Please remind me of that when I leave." He then adds, "And thank you."
Envoy smiles again and nods, then asks Baddock, "So, do you feel like your skin is trying to escape or any sudden urges to bite off my head, speak in tongues, or sprout extra limbs?"
"No more than usual." Baddock laughs.
With a slight wince, Sesus cowers at the sound of laughter.
"That's a good sign," the Exile says. "Any cravings for sweets and candies?"
Sesus looks up at Envoy, his eyes covered by the hood so his expression cannot be easily read. He then just shakes his head and turns his attention back at Baddock.
Baddock shrugs. "I'm really not that hungry right now."
"Alright then, I suppose you aren't going to turn into a monster," Envoy says, standing back up. "But if you do turn into one later, you'll let me know won't you?"
Baddock smiles and gives Envoy a mock salute. "Aye aye, Cap'n."
The fingers of Sesus' left arm twitches a little. He grabs the arm in his lap with his right hand and groans, as he leans forward, gritting his teeth.
Envoy returns the salute, and turns to exit, pausing only to ask the hooded figure, "Is there anything you need, sir?"
Sesus leans back, shuddering slightly as he looks back at Envoy. His lips draw back in a snarl, before he relaxes a little. He breathes heavily, then replies, "No, not at the moment," blinking away some tears of pain.
Baddock looks to the Jupani with a concerned expression on his face. "You okay, Sesus?"
"Well, just call if you do, Investigator," the Exile whispers before slipping out of the alcove.
Turning to Baddock, Sesus smiles at him and says, "Oh, I am fine." He pants and says, "Sorry to startle you." The fingers of his left hand unclose as the pain seems to disappear. He picks up with, "So, you and Searle got in some trouble?"
Baddock takes a moment to stretch his arms and crick his neck before responding. He nods to Sesus. "Yeah… Like I said, we were going a long just fine, when we hit a spot in the path where a bunch of those posts had their talismans removed. When we stopped, we got jumped by a buncha guys." He smiles. "But Searle an' I beat 'em all up." With a shrug, he adds, "I guess you know the rest."
Sesus nods and says, "Or can find out. What I am curious about is the talismans. You said 'removed'. How had this happened?" He waves his hand in front of himself and asks, "Where they knocked down? Taken down, or stolen?"
"I wish I knew that myself," Baddock replies with a shrug. "They looked like maybe they'd all caught on fire and got burned down, y'know? Like trees after a bad forest fire. I know those guys seemed pretty jazzed about somethin' when they surrounded us. I thought maybe they were responsible for it."
A couple of Temple Priest orderlies shuffle by in the background, reciting chants under their breaths as they deliver medical supplies to other patients.
Sesus' head slumps forward. He picks himself up a little and listens to the priests. Smiling to himself, he asks Baddock, "Would you say that there could have been some sort of forceful intervention?" He shakes his head a little. He reaches in under his cloak with one paw, and removes something from his ear. He asks, "Did this happen on your way to or from the Sanctuary?"
A Rath'ani priest in white robes shuffles into view beyond the partition, looking occasionally at a chart in his hands, and then adjusting his spectacles as he scans the ward for someone or something.
"On the way back from the Sanctuary. Searle an' I were heading to Gallis." Baddock thinks for a few seconds about the first question. "I sure don't think it was accidental," he says. "Nothing else looked damaged. My first impression was that someone really didn't want those things there, y'know?"
The priest walks up to Baddock, and looks his tablet over. "Ah. Baddock, yes? Well, my boy, you've been checked out … and you're free to go! Nothing wrong with you. Those scratches should heal up in a few days. May the First Ones watch and protect you!" And just as quickly, he spins and heads off.
Sesus is just about to ask something more, when he sighs deeply and leans back. Just waving a paw at Baddock, he mumbles, "Thank you… " A shudder goes through his body as he makes himself comfortable in the chair, adding to the world in general, "Hah, I am free of you, for now." And then he passes out.
Baddock looks up to thank the priest, but he leaves before the boy could get a word in. Seeing that the Jupani has already passed out in the chair, Baddock shrugs and gets up off of the cot, quickly and quietly making his way out.
