Midsummer 8, 6104 RTR (23 Jun 2000) Vignettes and notes from a test of twenty-four candidates for leadership of a faraway empire.
(Space) (Test of the Archon) (Willow) (Writings)
---

From the journal of Tree-Rings, scribe in the service of the Archon:

Of the original twenty-four candidates, not all complied with the Archon's decree that they submit themselves to testing for worthiness to become his successor, when they learned that an alien would be granted considerable authority in determining the nature of the tests. I myself have considerable misgivings about this eccentric move on the part of the Archon, but I must also recognize with all due humility that my wisdom pales in comparison to that of his Eminence. We are in difficult times, and Light-of-Star continues to make proclamations as if he were the Archon – and, even more grave, many watch his hands. Light-of-Star signs of the realm of the Sifras, the ancient workers of crystal, and of this star known as 'Primus', and quotes from apocryphal writers to support a message of prophesy of the import of this realm. What is so special about this place, that even the Archon consults an alien from this far-flung and forgotten world?

The Archon has selected additional candidates, bringing the number back up to twenty-four, and I have it on authority that twenty-three of our worlds are represented. Given the dismal performance of some of the candidates so soon into the tests, I can only presume that some of these choices were politic – but the alien seems able enough to notice their flaws. Still, I wonder how much weight the Archon will place on this alien's decision. What if the candidate who passes all of the tests is a follower of Light-of-Star? What if the candidate who is the best choice to succeed advocates conquest of the Primus System? Will the final decision hinge upon the candidates' attitudes toward Primus?

That, of course, remains to be seen, and may the Star grant the Archon even greater wisdom in this decision. For now, the contestants are masked, their identities concealed, identified only by a scheme of two colors for each. Of the twenty-four, their colors are:

  • Violet-Copper
  • Rose-Green
  • Gold-Tan
  • Ebony-Yellow
  • Sienna-Silver
  • Crimson-Teal
  • Cobalt-Black
  • Sky-Grey
  • Amber-White
  • Steel-Magenta
  • Ivory-Indigo
  • Seafoam-Turquoise
  • Rust-Brown
  • Mauve-Puce
  • Vermillion-Pink
  • Coal-Red
  • Midnight-White
  • Gunmetal-Purple
  • Royal-Bronze
  • Ice-Platinum
  • Smoke-Veridian
  • Earth-Jet
  • Hazel-Blue
  • Emerald-Goldenrod

Of these, all are male, with the exception of:

  • Rust-Brown
  • Coal-Red
  • Midnight-White
  • Ebony-Yellow
  • Sienna-Silver
  • Sky-Grey
  • All of the candidates have been assigned quarters in the Monastery of the Sunrise, attended by an order of monks loyal to the Archon, for a period of at least a month, though it may be much longer, as the Archon requires. As it has been explained to me, the first test is one of humility, to see if the candidates are willing to subject themselves to manual labor and tests, or whether their pride prevents it. Several have been put out of consideration by this alone.

I am to understand that the tests put forth are to help bring out whether each candidate is an independent thinker, is moral, and whether each will be or won't be easily influenced, and whether each candidate can be perceived as strong or weak by the People.

The alien, 'Willow of Dack', has been working as well, and is no stranger to manual labor by all measures. I have seen her husband and her daughter, who appear to be of some off-shoot of the Khattan people. The reactions of the candidates to her presence have varied greatly … and the same can be said for their reactions to her child, who is allowed to run about the place freely and is insatiably curious.

The candidates have been put to gardening and other menial labor, including such degrading work as the shoveling of manure. At one point, the water was shut off while candidates were asked to clean sections of the floor of the monastery.

The alien has been observing very closely, and has frequently stumbled into the candidates while they have been working. I do not think there is a single candidate she has not blundered into.

I understand that, next week, they will be taken to the valley in groups and dropped in the wilderness with a minimum of tools and supplies, and instructed to find their way back to civilization in three days. There have also been instances of simulated combat and sparring. Only a handful of the candidates stand out in prowess in such exercises, but I am to understand that most of these have been selected because of their experience as administrators, not as soldiers.

The monastery has had quite a number of visitors in the form of beggars. I shall advise the groundskeepers to be more diligent in making certain that no vagrants wander into the grounds during the test of the candidates in the wilderness.

Excerpts from notes taken by Tree-Rings while attempting to summarize comments and observations by Willow of Dack on the nature of the candidates, followed by notes from Willow of Dack herself. "Ob" indicates that Willow wishes to observe the candidate further, and considers him or her to be in the forefront amongst the contenders. "X" indicates that the candidate has been more or less written off.

  • Smoke-Veridian – Goes out of way to help others, say good things about someone whether or not that someone is around. Willing and eager to work. Average in matters of combat, above average in education. Scrubbed floors without water, didn't really accomplish much, but kept to task. Very polite when bumped into. Very friendly toward Nene, beggars.Seems genuinely nice, not very creative and no signs ofbeing a self thinker. Need to test to see how easily influenced andtolerant.
  • Midnight-White – Displays subtle sense of humor, creativity in gardening, often chastises others for oversights in their work. Average education, slightly below average in combat. Chewed out some monks when water was shut off. Reserved when bumped into. Very stern with Nene, reluctant to take time for beggars.A little aggressive but has social skills and wasonly one who thought to go to the monks about the lack of water. Notmuch creativity, but still sought a solution. A gardener? Imight talk to them later about plants.
  • Gunmetal-Purple – Very social, eager to please and impress. Gives impression of being open-minded. Below average in fighting prowess, average in education, compared to other candidates. Gave up in frustration after trying to scrub floor for an hour without water. Apologetic when bumped into. Very popular with Nene, but also permissive. Went out of way to help beggars. Also very nice, but not much in the way of anindependant thinker. Giving up on the task wasn't a good sign, nor wasbeing permissive with Nene when she was being a bother. Does seem verykind though, but how do they act when bullied? Open-mindedness is alsogood.
  • Vermillion-Pink – Frequently complains … when Willow isn't around. Does work to the letter, but doesn't go above and beyond the call of duty. Slightly above average in fighting prowess. Well educated and articulate. When water was shut off, spent time going around in search of water (never found any). When bumped into, started as if to sign berating remarks, then stopped when he realized who it was. Was short with Nene, had nothing to do with beggars.Seems a suckup and acts a bit snide. Appears to acthaughty. No creativity or motivation. (X)
  • Rust-Brown – Moderately social, sophisticated, creative, intelligent, somewhat haughty. Slightly below average in fighting prowess. When water was shut off, persuaded several acolytes to do scrubbing for her. When bumped into, was polite, but reserved. Showed some agitation when Nene was being difficult, but was polite. Was polite, took time with beggars, but patronizing in demeanor.Has definate leadership skills, but also shows a lackof respect for "lessers". Still seems to be in control of feelings anddoes have some creativity. Will have to see what viewpoints are onother races and what type of leader they really are.
  • Ivory-Indigo – Almost gushing in compliments, but intelligent, more brain than brawn. Very educated and traveled. Superior religious and historical knowledge, but near the bottom in fighting prowess. When water was shut off, spent the time trying to fix the plumbing. When bumped into, was exceedingly apologetic. Friendly to Nene, answered many questions. Took time with beggars, tried to preach word of the Star to them.Slightly too complimentary. A do it yourself person andshows definate concern for not only the physical needs of people butalso the spiritual side. Unfortunately they don't seem to be much of awarrior and there might be a problem when faced with a warrior'sproblem. Might be a good spiritual leader, but in a society as combatheavy as the Silent-Ones a lack of a warrior's skill isn't good.
  • Crimson-Teal – Ascetic, possibly a monk, seems inclined to pick the least comfortable way to get something done, but somehow manages to get it done anyway. Average in combat prowess. Very educated in history, but seems to shy away from all things technological. Cleaned large section of floor by spitting on it and rubbing with brush. Neutral in demeanor when bumped into. Not very responsive to Nene, except when it looked like she might be getting into trouble, then was firm but polite in chastising her. Took time to help beggars, but doesn't have much of a bedside manner, admonished them to sin less so that the Star would grant them success.Seems book smart but lacks much compassion or emotion.Might have to see how they react to an emotional situation to see whatexactly their leanings are in that direction. Still, seems to have agood control over emotions and temper.
  • Ice-Platinum – Slow starter, seems prone to think things through, but has gift for finding more efficient way to achieve tasks and "thinking outside of the box", at expense of being able to come up with quick, instant solutions. Has tendency on occasion to "toot one's own horn" if it looks like his accomplishments are being overlooked. When water was shut off, opened up a piece of machinery and used some chemical compounds as a cleaning agent. However, the piece of machinery required some repair afterward. Friendly around Nene, but seems to have little experience with children, seemed overly concerned Nene might hurt herself. Helped beggars, but seemed concerned he might catch diseases from them.Rough edges, but creativity is there and so is potentialfor leadership. The main concern is that they don't seem to be all thatkeen on getting hands dirty and could potentially overcompensate and notthink about long term consequences. Still, came up with one of the mostcreative soloutions with the no water problem.
  • Royal-Bronze – Blunt, honest to a fault, gives impression of being very plain and open, self-confident – could be read as having sense of self-superiority. Average in education, above average in combat. When water was shut off, first went to report problem, then indicated he would not scrub floor without water, because he might damage it by scouring it dry. When it was found that the floor was not scrubbed, and therefore he had failed, but the water was later turned on, he went back and scrubbed the floor during his free time. When bumped into, suggested that Willow needs to work on being more convincing when "accidentally" bumping into someone, but also suggested that deceit is ultimately flawed. Was tolerant of Nene, but didn't go out of way to engage in conversation. Assisted beggars, but seemed anxious to be done and back to his work again.A definate possibility in seeing Willow's "bumping"trick. Seems to be more of a soldier than a ruler and also might dowell to have their emotions tested. Has a brain, has patience, but dothey have a heart? (Ob)
  • Earth-Jet – By coincidence, seems to fit first color, earthy/woodsy sort, perhaps a farmer or forester, used to manual labor, slightly below average combat skill, slightly below average education in history, etc. Used spit-polish method of trying to clean floor. Unresponsive when bumped into. Largely ignored Nene. Showed no reluctance, however, in helping beggars. Not afraid to get hands dirty, but also doesn't seem tonotice things around him. Some creativity but so far not enough for aleadership role. (X)
  • Mauve-Puce – Very creative, friendly, social. Well-educated, but easily distracted. In general, finishes the race, but often last. Has some organizational and leadership skills, but when in a team environment, usually pushed out of the forefront by someone more "vocal" (so to speak). Tried using an oil-based substance to clean floor, ended up making a terrible mess, accidentally started fire, put it out. When bumped into, was apologetic, tried to crack jokes. Very engaging with Nene, easily distracted from work. Quick to help beggars, preach the Star to them.Potential leadership skills, but also too easily bulliedand too easily distracted. Also seems somewhat clumsy. (X)
  • Ebony-Yellow – Seems on edge, doesn't seem to like being around Willow, but very diligent worker, doesn't cut corners, and catches little details. Very observant, "thinks outside the box", shows evidence of education (focused in fine arts?), but seems unfamiliar with high technology. Humble, doesn't call attention to self. Briefly tried to figure out plumbing, banged on it in frustration, tried to ask for water, tried spit-polish method (didn't work very well), tried dry-brushing (didn't work well either), then ended up rubbing hands raw trying to clean floor by hand until stopped. Went back later after failing test to clean floor on own time. Friendly to Nene, but reluctant to put work aside to spend time with Nene – promised to spend time later, and followed through, taught some games. Quick to help beggars, preach the Star to them.Another potential leader choice despite the lackof familiarity with technology. Keeps on task but also takes on extratasks that aren't necessary. The potential xenophobia might be aproblem, and morals might need to be tested, as will leadership skills.Still, in the front running. (Ob)
  • Coal-Red – Serious, humorless, but intelligent and thoughtful, careful planner. Shows frustration when given frustrating tasks, may have temper problem. Determined and stubborn, won't give up easily, even on impossible tasks. Will stop own work at times to go out of way to help others one day, will not want to be bothered the next. Hard to pin down from casual observation. Gave up when water was shut off and was unable to find source of water. Was jumpy when bumped into. Frustrated with Nene and beggars. So far seems too much like a soldier and not enough likea good leader. Not good with people and doesn't seem to have muchcompassion.
  • Seafoam-Turquoise – Hands down best warrior in entire group. If complimented (i.e., "You're the best swordfighter here,") will agree ("That is true."), and is very blunt in offering opinions on self or others if asked. Average in education, has formal social skills, but not the "life of the party" by any means – but level-headed and capable in "surprise" tests and is a team player. In shut-off water test, tried various methods (brush with no water, spit on floor, rub with bare hands, search for water), ended up giving up. When bumped into, caught Willow and put her back on her feet. Tolerant of Nene when working, more sociable when having free time. When faced with beggars, gave them some food, then made beggars wait until he was finished with current task before tending to them, then went out of way to assist, get them cleaned up, told them about Star.An interesting candidate. Shows a measure ofcompassion hidden under a measure of a soldierlike exterior. Probablysomeone the Silent-Ones could easily regard as a leader. Morality mostdefinately might need to be tested but also one of those in frontrunning. (Ob)
  • Rose-Green – Bold, stubborn, aggressive, eager to perform tasks that involve physical exertion, shows somewhat less patience for menial tasks, mental challenges. Social, but has very warrior-like demeanor. Takes initiative, sometimes to the point of jumping the gun or falling flat on his face because he didn't ask enough questions before starting. Nevertheless, capable and diligent … though gave up in frustration on no-water test. Seemed on verge of losing temper when Willow bumped into him. Annoyed by Nene's presence, largely ignored. Assisted beggars, but not very friendly.Could potentially be in the front running, were it not forthe lack of patience, lack of forethought, and lack of compassion. Toomany flaws to really consider a leader. (X)
  • Gold-Tan – Proud, also very warrior-like, aggressive, sometimes even boastful. Obeys orders, but seems to be resentful of Willow's presence. Shows more patience for menial tasks, etc., but doesn't even pretend to be humble. Commanding personality, probably military background. In no-water test, overpowered two acolytes, then hauled water from alternative source to clean floor. When bumped into, was unresponsive. Ignored Nene. Assisted beggars, very formal, quick to be done with them.Too aggressive in a problem that could have been solvedwithout such tendancies. Also not all that compassionate. (X)
  • Sienna-Silver – Caring, compassionate, goes out of way to help others, but sometimes at expense of own success. Patient, deliberate, but very lacking in personal combat skills. Above average in education. Used spit-polish method to try to clean floor. Polite when bumped into. Very accommodating with beggars and Nene, but to neglect of personal tasks.Very compassionate, but perhaps a bit too much so.Might need to have agressive tendancies and "stand up for yourself"tendancies tested.
  • Steel-Magenta – Proud bearing, above average in both education and combat prowess. Demonstrates self-confidence, natural leadership abilities. Shrewd, may possibly have a knack for telling when something is a test or not. Monks were unable to get water shut off for first water-shut-off test. Second time, investigated plumbing, asked for water, then proceeded to clean with spit-polish method. Polite when bumped into, seemed to find amusement in situation. Stern but firm with Nene when she interrupted work, perhaps a little too firm, but was very outgoing when encountering her on own time. Took time to accommodate beggars, told them of Star. Not too sure what to think of this one. Good workscould just be for show or they could be signs of a true leader. Mightask Seafoam opinion on this one and most assuredly needs to be morallytested… but HOW might be up to debate. A sharp mind is a leadershipskill that can't be ignored, but a sharp mind is also very dangerous inthe wrong type of leader. I will closely observe this one.
  • Violet-Copper – Obedient, humble, servant demeanor when performing tasks. Shows willingness to try and make mistakes, then try again when asked to perform unfamiliar (or actually impossible) tasks. Takes initiative, demonstrates leadership skills when placed in a group and required to perform a task as a team. Remarkable combat prowess, above average education. However, is very "quiet" (even for a Silent-One), tends to be frugal with words, not especially social. Hard to determine whether he is "at ease" around Willow or not. Hard to read. During "no-water" test, investigated plumbing, determined that shut-off was deliberate, proceeded to set off sprinkler system, then finished washing floor. Caught Willow before she could bumble into him, set her back on her feet, went back to work. Acknowledged Nene's presence (head nods, etc.) when she would show up while working, but would not set aside work to play with her. Was very accommodating on own time, however, though not "playful" – more of a teacher. Took extra effort to help beggars, teach them about Star, get them cleaned up.Leadership skills, stays on task, although somewhatanti-social. Seems to have a compassionate heart from the fact thatthey helped the beggars and spent time with Nene. The big test would beif they could be vocal when the time arises. Sprinkler soloution showedcreativity. Definitely in the front running. (Ob)
  • Hazel-Blue – Shows exceptional skill in tests in wilderness environments – obviously woodsy or with survival training. Evidently experienced in military exercises, demonstrates ability to command, and also able to follow orders. Very durable. Also very religious, to point of seeming to be superstitious. When was unable to get water to wash floor, attempted to scrub with dry brush until brush was worn down, then used hands. Stopped when hands were bleeding. Does not seem to be at ease around Willow or Nene. Helped beggars, but seemed uneasy around them, too.Seems a good person and shows leadership skill, but alsodoesn't seem good with people. Not a very good skill for a ruler. (X)
  • Emerald-Goldenrod – Proud and dignified, chivalrous and polite, but also patriarchal. ("This is a MAN'S job… ") Very stubborn, die-hard in performing tasks, even when impossible to complete. Strong code of honor. Obvious military background. High combat prowess, and leadership skills. Attempted to intervene to clean floor on behalf of Coal-Red, was shooed away. When water was shut off, proceeded to try to "fix" plumbing, caused a substantial mess, spent rest of day cleaning up mess. When bumped into, was polite and chivalrous. Very polite to Nene, but not "playful". Accommodating to beggars.Willing to fix own mistakes and seems to care forother people, but also seems a little too traditional and stuck inways. Not too sure what to think and the slight xenophobia with meand Nene make me nervous. Will just observe this one for now.
  • Cobalt-Black – Determined, ruthlessly efficient. Machiavellian in outlook. Strong and confident, articulate, but not always fully cooperative when placed as a subordinate to others. When water was shut off, proceeded to try to clean for a while, then gave up in frustration. When bumped into, indicated that he did not appreciate such facetiousness. Got Nene to help with cleaning. Got beggars to help clean in return for food/etc.Might be a good leader and obviously knows how tomotivate others, but also seems too intolerant. Might want to see wherethey stand morally but at the moment they're sort of on the middlescale.
  • Sky-Grey – Diplomatic, social, conversive. Cautious, sometimes hesitant, but observant and thoughtful. Well educated, below average combat ability/experience. Gave up part-way into floor-scrubbing exercise. Apologetic when bumped into. Engaging with Nene, but at expense of personal tasks. Chatty with beggars, assisted them.Sociable, but doesn't seem very agressive and is somewhateasily distracted. Might be bullied and influenced a bit too easily. (X)
  • Amber-Maroon – Proud and traditional, but also very curious and inquisitive, and very fond of technology and strange things. Very well educated, but below average in combat ability/experience. Might be a scientist or explorer of some sort. Cooperative, used to working as part of a team. Not at the top of the line in endurance in physical tests, though. Gave out part-way into floor-scrubbing exercise, tried to get permission to continue later. Polite when bumped into. Spent most time with Nene asking questions about Sinai. Somewhat reluctant to put aside work to help beggars, but assisted them nonetheless.Seems nice and inquisitive and obviously not veryxenophobic, but potential to curl up if met with an aggressive leader oran aggressive situation. Might do well to see how person is able tostand up for themselves, but currently not in front running.

  • Sunlight set the morning sky afire with red and magenta and lighter shades of blue, chasing away the stars, though the sun itself could not yet be seen over the ridge of mountains to the east. Seated before a window of cut glass arranged in patterns of diamond-like shapes radiating outward from a stylized star, an aged cheetah in robes of white watched the lightening sky, as his chamber atop the highest spire of the monastery glowed faintly in warm hues of gold and bronze.

The sound of footsteps heralded the approach of Scribe Tree-Rings, bearing in his hand a crystaline cylinder. He paused at the edge of the chamber, standing at attention, as the Archon's chair slowly rotated about, accompanied by a whisper of displaced air.

The Archon held out one hand for the translucent cylinder, then took it up and unrolled it like a scroll. Sections of the scroll darkened, forming symbols, and the Archon read, occasionally nodding, occasionally frowning. All the while, Tree-Rings stood there, still at attention, until the Archon rolled up the crystal-scroll once more and handed it back to the scribe.

"The candidates identified by the color combinations of 'Mauve-Puce', 'Vermillion-Pink', 'Coal-Red', 'Earth-Jet', 'Hazel-Blue', 'Rose-Green', 'Gold-Tan', and 'Sky-Grey' are to be removed, and replaced, as per my instructions. See to it that this is done in secret, and that the replacements behave in a manner consistent with the performance so far of the dismissed candidates," the Archon signed in slow hand movements. Then, he added, "but wait until after the next test, in the wilderness. Some of the more disruptive elements may shed light upon the suitability of the more favored candidates."

At the end of the sequence of hand-signs, Tree-Rings bowed in subservience, then signed, "Your eminence, preparations will be made at once."

The Archon paused, then signed, "Something troubles you."

Tree-Rings gave a start, then dropped to one knee, bowing low to the elder. "Forgive me, Archon. I – "

The Archon waved off the apology, then formed with motions of his hands, "Sign freely."

Tree-Rings dipped his head again, then slowly regained his feet. "I am just concerned about some of the candidates, and how they are faring. I have my suspicions about the identities of some of the candidates."

"Then keep those suspicions to yourself," the Archon signed. "If Lady Willow of Dack wishes for the candidates to be anonymous, then you shall cooperate and maintain that anonymity."

"Of course," signed Tree-Rings. "I will carry out your directives presently." With an approving nod from the Archon, the scribe bowed again, then tucked away the crystal cylinder while backing out of the chamber, and sprinted off to carry out his orders.

The Archon then turned back to face the window again, as the sun had begun to limn the mountains, and fog swept down from the peaks and through the valley, stirred up by the intrusion of the sunlight. With a wave of his hand, the window tinted, dimming the view of the outdoors, and he turned his chair again, this time to face a dark mirror with an ornate frame composed of wrought forms of angelic cheetahs posed as if rushing outward in flight and supporting the glassy pane. With another hand gesture, the mirror glowed, then slowly focused to show a view of a gathering hall, where several cheetahs in acolyte robes of sometimes garishly clashing colors (they were, after all, random combinations) form a line, awaiting their next test.

The Archon set his elbows upon the armrests of his throne, and rested his chin upon the bridged fingers of his hands, smiling an ironic smile as he watched the next challenge unfold…

Report of Groundskeeper Staff-Hand on "Survival" Test, with subsequent commentary added by Lady Willow Dack:

As per our instructions, we randomly divided the candidates into eight teams of three members each, and dropped them off after nightfall. The candidates were allowed to be misinformed as to their initial location, as word was going around that they were going to be dropped in the valley next to the monastery. Of course, if we'd done that, they'd be wandering into each other. Watch groups were positioned on the mountains above each valley.

  • Ice-Platinum / Rust-Brown / Royal-BronzeNot so sure if putting this bunch together was a great idea at first. Not sure if they realized how closely we were observing them. Rust-Brown and Ice-Platinum had a "polite" dispute, and neither of them seemed to like Royal-Bronze much. Blunt fellow, but he tends to be right. Rust-Brown seemed to be first to take initiative, Ice-Platinum wanted to plan everything out first, Royal-Bronze mostly let others finish with hand-clapping match, then proposed compromises. Royal-Bronze figured out that group wasn't actually in valley with monastery by noticing difference in stars. Ice-Platinum, Royal-Bronze seemed at home in rough conditions. Rust-Brown didn't seem to hold up so well to "roughing it", must be city-raised. Nonetheless, group succeeded – barely – in reaching checkpoint before end of test. Tied with Coal-Red/Sky-Grey/Violet-Copper for fourth place.Royal Bronze shined during this test. He had the patience to leteveryone have their say before offering solutions, and also figured outthat he has been moved elsewhere. Ice-Platinum showed some good planningskills and Rust Brown showed good leadership skills, but nothingextraordinary.
  • Rose-Green / Mauve-Puce / Gunmetal-PurpleDefinitely a bad combination. Rose-Green bossed/bullied others around, had them going around in circles. Mauve-Puce and Gunmetal-Purple seemed lost in wilderness. Rose-Green had modicum of survival skills, was able to hunt, probably made sure this was best-fed group, but was stubbornly set on notion that this was the same valley that had the monastery at the peak. Had to be airlifted off of mountain face.Rose Green, although showed good wilderness survival skills nonethelessalso showed themselves to not be very adaptable and also showed signs ofstubbornness. The others allowed themselves to be bullied around by himwhen they should have stood up more or took more of an initiative or atleast looked for their own soloutions. Nobody in this groupparticularly stood out and it is suggested that they all be removed fromthe running.
  • Cobalt-Black / Ebony-Yellow / Ivory-IndigoWorked together well as team. Cobalt-Black took on leadership/organizational role, but Ebony-Yellow surprisingly showed best wilderness survival skills of group. Ivory-Indigo was more follower than leader, albeit team player. During breaks, spent much time debating. Cobalt-Black and Ivory-Indigo seemed diametrically opposed on moral issues. Ebony-Yellow at first seemed more aligned with Cobalt-Black, but appeared to be siding more with Ivory-Indigo toward end of test. Succeeded in reaching checkpoint before end of test. Came in third place amongst groups.Cobalt-Black showed signs of being a good leader and also signs of not delaying too much. One thing interesting to note though was that Ebony-Yellow apparently changed opinions on certain issues during the debate. First impression would be that they might be easily influenced by a more powerful leader, until noted that they sided with the meeker Ivory-Indigo at the end of the debate. This shows more as a sign of not having opinions and viewpoints set in stone as opposed to being influenced easily. Adaptibility… so what were they debating about?
  • Coal-Red / Sky-Grey / Violet-CopperSome conflict between Violet-Copper and Coal-Red in leadership roles. At first, Coal-Red asserted self as leader of group, but started leading group in circle in thick fog. Sky-Grey demonstrated some knowledge of wilderness skills, but was easily cowed, reluctant to speak up or contradict. Violet-Copper challenged Coal-Red's authority, demanded that Sky-Grey be allowed to offer advice. Coal-Red tried to separate from rest of group, became violent. Sky-Grey and Violet-Copper together subdued Coal-Red, carried her partway up mountain within view of checkpoint, then released her, and traveled rest of way. Met deadline, but barely. Tied with Ice-Platinum/Rust-Brown/Royal-Bronze for fourth place. One of the more interesting groups to observe. Coal-Red is is much toostubborn and it is suggested that she be dropped from the contest.Violet-Copper showed signs of good leadership and also a certain measureof concern by demanding that Sky-Grey be allowed an opinion despite hermeekness. The group could have potentially come in first were it notfor Coal-Red, but this was not a race. Sky-Grey also showed too muchmeekness and it is suggested that she be removed from the running aswell.
  • Steel-Magenta / Amber-Maroon / Emerald-GoldenrodSteel-Magenta acted as leader of group, though Steel-Magenta and Amber-Maroon displayed lack of knowledge of wilderness survival. Emerald-Goldenrod showed some skill, mainly in procuring drinkable water and hunting for food. Group had very little conflict, but Amber-Maroon showed propensity for getting into trouble. Had to be treated for exposure to mild toxins from hazardous wildlife. Arrived at checkpoint one day late, last of groups that made it to checkpoint at all.Nobody in this group stood out particularly, either good or bad.Amber-Maroon showed signs of brashness or carelessness in regards topoisoning themselves and it is suggested that they be taken out of therunning. The other two need to be tested more.
  • Seafoam-Turquoise / Hazel-Blue / Vermillion-PinkSeafoam-Turquoise and Hazel-Blue both obviously skilled at surviving in wilderness environments. Hazel-Blue very quickly determined actual location, and was largely responsible for plotting course for group. Seafoam-Turquoise dealt with hunting, cleaning. Vermillion-Pink was dead weight, frequently complaining. Group arrived at checkpoint with plenty time to spare, came in second place amongst groups.Another exceptional group despite Vermillion-Pink's lack ofparticipation. Minimal argument and Seaform-Turquoise and Hazel-Bluedelegated authority and acted to the best of their skills. Also showedpatience with Vermillion-Pink. Suggest that Vermillion-Pink be removedfrom running.
  • Crimson-Teal / Earth-Jet / Midnight-WhiteCrimson-Teal, Earth-Jet, Midnight-White all showed ability in navigating and survival. First group to reach checkpoint, a full day ahead of deadline. However, observed what might be considered flirtatious behavior between Earth-Jet and Midnight-White. No clear formation of leader of group, all three seemed evenly matched, capable in this particular test, did not seem to be especially challenged.Nothing extraordinary, although flirtatious behavior between two of thecontenders was odd. Still, nothing stood out as exceptional or bad. Nocompliments or criticisms except for the fact that something in thisgroup obviously worked, because they made it to the checkpoint.
  • Gold-Tan / Smoke-Veridian / Sienna-SilverGold-Tan was most assertive, and most adapted to environment, but very impatient with others, could be considered abusive of Sienna-Silver. Smoke-Veridian sided with Gold-Tan in derision of Sienna-Silver's ineptitude at wilderness survival, seemed to be adding fuel to fire. Intervention was required when Gold-Tan became angry with Sienna-Silver and became violent. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. Word is that the Archon is most displeased with Gold-Tan. Hope he's nobody terribly important in the empire. Group was unable to complete test due to required intervention.Very disappointing. I agree with the Archon in that Gold-Tan be removedfrom the running, and also that Smoke-Veridian be removed as well forfinding nothing wrong with these abuses.

  • Advisory and Notes from Lady Willow Dack on Candidates, After Wilderness Survival Exercise:

  • It is suggested that Hazel-Blue, although suggested before aspotentially being considered to be dropped from the race, be put backin.
  • It is the suggestion of this writer that the following men be removedfrom the contest:

  • Mauve-Puce – Allowed self to be bossed and bullied by an obviously ineptleader.
  • Vermillion-Pink – Continues to be haughty and arrogant and unwilling towork. Was completely useless as a leader, provider, or idea personduring survival trial.
  • Coal-Red – Stubborn and tempermental. Not adaptable and refuses tolisten to advice.
  • Earth-Jet – Might make for a good leader for a colony, but lacksrefinement or the skills of keeping on task.
  • Rose-Green – Also stubborn and not very creative. Doesn't think thingsthrough and suffers because of it.
  • Gold-Tan – A bully, pure and simple. Much too cruel and has nocompassion at all.
  • Sky-Grey – Intelligent and creative, but too meek to be a leader.
  • Sienna-Silver – Probably the nicest and most compassionate of thecontendors, but also too meek. Did not appear to have stood up forherself much under Gold-Tan's abuses and was an obvious target for suchby more aggressive folks.
  • Amber-Maroon – Inquisitiveness is good, but not to the point that onecan hurt themselves. Seems to lack a certain measure of common sense.
  • Ivory-Indigo – Sounds like a good person much like Sienna, but too meekfor leadership. They would probably make an exceptional spiritualadvisor, but not an Archon.
  • Gunmetal-Purple – Allowed self to be bullied by an inept ruler. Seemsnice and intelligent but not a leader.
  • Rust-Brown – A bit too quick to argue and seems patronizing. Wouldprobably make an excellent leader if tempered, but is currently not in agood leadership position now.
  • Smoke-Veridian – Did not find anything wrong or did not speak outagainst Gold-Tan's abuse of Sienna-Silver. In fact he sided with thebully. A bully's lackey is no better than a bully.
  • The following are people that Willow is seriously considering forleadership roles:

  • Royal-Bronze – Showed patience and was willing to compromise. Knew thatsometimes it's best to let someone have their say before diving intodecisions.
  • Violet-Copper – Shows signs of knowing when to take charge of asituation and when to let someone else speak. Interesting that theyhefted their partner and carried her to end point. Seems to have bothgood leadership skills and a level head.
  • Seafoam-Turquoise – Showed no signs of arrogance during the test and didtheir job. Leadership skills still need to be tested as do moralstandings.
  • Ebony-Yellow – In a position where might have not been the best leader, stepped down and took the role of provider and wilderness guide. Seemsadaptable to accepting new opinions, but how often do those opinionschange? Leadership needs to be tested, as does morality.
  • Although they are not in the front running, these are still consideredto be in the contest and their standing could change depending on howobservances go.

  • Crimson-Teal: The test didn't reveal very much about this person. Nodiscernable leadership skills or signs of compassion. They will need tobe tested later. Maybe Willow can take this one to a hospital full ofsick people and see how they react to being around those that are dying.
  • Cobalt-Black: Seems cold and harsh, but something to be said aboutsomeone who isn't afraid to snap at someone who is going to judgewhether they should be leader of the Silent-Ones. Not too sure ifthey're a leader type because they have the skills or simply becausethey demand to lead. Someone to interview later and definately testmorals.
  • Steel-Magenta: Sincerity needs to be checked. Although not currentlyin the front running, needs to definitely be put under observation. What are their morals?
  • Midnight-White: A little too eager to raise voice at people. Still nottoo sure what type of leader they make or where they stand morally.Wonder what she'll say about getting flirted at with Earth-Jet? Mightbe interesting to know who instigated the affections and who respondedto them (does this happen often?)
  • Ice-Platinum: Survival test showed that they might not be afraid to gethands dirty, but delays too much in planning and doesn't seem to thinkahead to the larger goal in mind.
  • Hazel-Blue: Originally considered to be out of the contest, but due to the factthat his group did so well despite the dead weight of Vermillion-Pink, hewas reconsidered. The superstition might be a problem as well as thehesitance to deal with the beggars. Moral standing might need to betested as well as general social skills. Will probably have tointerview this one.
  • Emerald-Goldenrod: Besides survival skill and lack of concern aboutgetting hands dirty not much was observed from survival test. Will haveto spar with this one to see how they react to fighting with a lady. Aninterview might be in order afterwards.

  • "Nene, I heard that you learned some new games. Care to show Papa?"

"YAH! I learned to play Catchacreen!"

    "Catch a Creen?"

"Uh-huh! You gotsa get these coins, see? See the Creen on the back?"

"Ah … yes, that looks like a Creen, I suppose. But those aren't coins. They're crackers. Incredibly stale crackers … hard crackers, too. Goodness, are these edible?"

"They're bushes! And here are seeds. The Creen likesta eat those. One, two, three, FOUR."

"All right. Four seeds, one Creen, the rest of the tokens are blank."

    "Twenny-five bushes – coins. You go … and … here! Stack 'em up. One-a-seed, one-a-bush, one-a-seed, one-a-CREEN, one-a-seed, one-a-bush, one-a-seed … then stack-a-bush, stack-a-bush, stack-a-bush, stack-a-bush, stack-a-bush, stack-a-bush, stack-a-bush, stack-a-bush, sackabush, sagabush-sabush, busha-busha-busha, bushbushbushbush … Tada! Split for me, Papa?"

    "Split?"

"Yah. Like this. Halfa stack, halfa stack, switchem round. Switchem 'gain, onna ground! A rhyme!"

"Ah, you mean to mix them up. Like cutting a deck of cards. Any road, now it's been cut twice, but that's not mixed up very well. Now what?"

"One, two, three, four, five … one row! One, two, three, four, five … TWO row! One, two, three, four, five … THREE ROW! One, two, three, four, five … FOUR ROW! One, two, three, four, five … FIVE ROW!"

"Very good. Here, let me line them up better … that's it … we've got a square."

    "A square!"

    "Now what?"

"Okee, I peek inna bushes, but I don't show you what I see. See?"

"You're not supposed to show me."

"Right. Okee. I put it back … your turn!"

    "What's the object here?"

    "Catchacreen!"

"Of course. All right. No Creen this time. Your turn… "

"A SEED! The Creen is close by!"

"Unless I cut the stack near the Creen. I pick this one … Ah, just an empty bush."

"I GOT IT! I GOTTA CREEN!"

"Very good, Nene. I guess there's a little bit of strategy here. It reminds me a little of 'Memory'. Want to play that?"

    "Nawwww. Let's Catchacreen 'gain!"

"Very well, then. This time, don't show me your cracker, all right?"

    "One-a-seed, one-a-bush, one-a-seed, one-a-CREEN, one-a-seed, one-a-bush, one-a-seed, bushbushbushbushbush… "

"Your eminence," signed Scribe Tree-Rings, bowing as he formed the signs.

The Archon, seated on his throne, made a "Proceed" gesture.

"Lady Willow of Dack has amended her list, in light of the performance after the wilderness exercise. Fully half and one more are to be dismissed now … but Hazel-Blue has been reconsidered, and taken off the 'out' list," signed the scribe, and then he paused to hand a translucent cylinder to the Archon.

The Archon unrolled the cylinder. On it was an updated list of those to be dismissed: Smoke-Veridian, Rust-Brown, Mauve-Puce, Vermillion-Pink, Coal-Red, Gunmetal-Purple, Earth-Jet, Hazel-Blue, Rose-Green, Gold-Tan, Sienna-Silver, Sky-Grey, Amber-Maroon, and Ivory-Indigo. Accompanying these recommendations were notes as to the reasons for the five new names added to the list, and for the change in Hazel-Blue's status. The Archon nodded, and signed, "So be it. Hazel-Blue will not be dismissed, but these others shall be excused before morning. See to it that Gold-Tan does not depart before I have a chance to sign to him personally."

The scribe nodded. "Please forgive me, your Eminence, but may I offer a suggestion regarding Gold-Tan?"

The Archon raised one eyebrow, and nodded to continue.

"His dismal performance is well known to the rest of the group," signed the scribe, "and I think they will all be glad to see him go. I believe that a substitute in his place may have difficulty in properly playing the part without – perhaps – being too disruptive. They may have reason to suspect more than a change of heart. I humbly submit that Gold-Tan should not be replaced with an impostor, and that his dismissal not be a secret."

The Archon pondered this for a time, then signed, "So be it. Such behavior is intolerable. We shall now have twenty-three candidates." He scanned over the "keep" list, somewhat shorter now: Midnight-White, Royal-Bronze, Ice-Platinum, Emerald-Goldenrod, Violet-Copper, Ebony-Yellow, Crimson-Teal, Cobalt-Black, Steel-Magenta, Seafoam Turquoise, and the reconsidered Hazel-Blue. His brow raised again with interest as he read the requests for personal interviews – and sparring matches – with several of the remaining candidates … and that the "forerunner" list of four (Royal-Bronze, Seafoam-Turquoise, Violet-Copper and Ebony-Yellow) had not changed. He pressed his signet ring to a receptor on the crystal scroll, then retracted it to cylinder form again to hand to the scribe, nodding approval.

"One more thing, your Eminence," signed the scribe, "if I may ask?"

    The Archon nodded.

"Lady Willow of Dack wishes to know if 'Yoshua' and Light-of-Star are still amongst those in competition," Scribe Tree-Rings signed.

The Archon paused a moment, surprise showing on his face, then he nodded. "The answer is, 'Yes.'"

"A strong hand is needed to steer the course," signed Cobalt-Black, his black-blue robes highlighted only dimly by the light of the flickering campfire.

Ebony-Yellow nodded. "Of course. It is not good that a leader should be perceived as weak. He will invite challenges from rivals, whether within his nation or without. A leader must be willing to make the right decision, even if it is unpopular.

Cobalt-Black continued, "A politician is one who seeks to be loved by the people. A tyrant is one who seeks to be feared by the people. But a statesman seeks respect. In order to be a good leader, you must command respect, and, if need be, fear. If you can do so effectively, then you will earn a measure of love from your people as well."

"I am not so certain I agree," signed Ivory-Indigo, his own robes a combination of off-white and blue-purple. "To be loved by the people is a sign of one's success, and respect too. I certainly do not trust those who pander to this or that party, seeking approval from all when it will not be given. But you sign too easily of inspiring fear in the people – I would think that the only ones who should fear a strong leader would be criminals and rabble-rousers and enemies, not the public as a whole."

"Do we not fear the Star?" signed Cobalt-Black. "Far be it from me to claim to be the Star, like certain leaders in our time, but the Star's governance should still be a model for our performance."

"It is written that the Star is love," signed Ebony-Yellow, in slow, punctuated movements.

"The sign for 'love' is often reinterpreted in simplistic ways," Cobalt-Black responded in loose gestures. "The Star does not love each of us, as a parent loves a child. The Star loves us as a people. What parent would ask his child to sacrifice himself to the flames? But that has been asked of many believers, whom we revere as martyrs to this day. A leader cannot care for each and every one of his subjects. He cannot possibly hope to. The leader must look at the people as a whole, and sometimes the few must be sacrificed for the many."

"There is some truth in that," interjected Ivory-Indigo, "but it is not a decision to come to lightly. There is a danger in suggesting that the individual has no value. We may become like the Nagai Imperium, who sacrifice those who are no longer 'productive', and become cold-blooded in spirit if not in body."

"And even so, there is still some merit in that they recognize the importance of preserving the society – which will live on – rather than cheating it at the expense of the mortal individual – who will pass on and never return," retorted Cobalt-Black.

Cobalt-Black and Ivory-Indigo exchanged many more signs, showing the faintest hints of agitation as they progressed, debating the extent to which a society or a ruler should be willing to sacrifice an individual or a small portion of the society for the greater good.

"What of dissenting voices?" offered Ebony-Yellow, in neutral hand signs, after spending a long time closely watching the vigorous exchange. "How are they to be dealt with? The spread of discord might be disruptive to society and undermine the authority of the ruler. But there might be cause for the ruler's behavior to be questioned, and too harsh of a response can have a chilling effect on the willingness of subordinates to offer advice."

Cobalt-Black shook his head. "The ruler must be obeyed. A soldier does not disobey his superiors, even if he is told to do that which is plainly wrong. He and his comrades are collectively the sword held by the strong arm of the ruler's chain of command. Mortals are fallible, but for the sake of order, commands must be obeyed. The soldier cannot see the whole battlefield, or the import of his actions. If the enemy is attacking strategic positions afar, it may be necessary for a smaller force to attack their villages left unprotected. The enemy may withdraw and travel a great distance in order to respond to the attacks on their families and homesteads, allowing time to regroup and prepare better defenses."

"You advocate the attacking of innocents?" signed Ivory-Indigo in wide gestures, as if asking a rhetorical question.

"This sounds cold, but in war, there are no innocents," signed Cobalt-Black. "All societies that use weapons of mass destruction recognize this, or delude themselves. The wife of the warrior gives him comfort, and bears him children – which, when they come of age, shall become more warriors. The laborer makes more weapons of war, or food to feed the warrior. In the most celebrated war of the Terrans, before they even reached the stars, one of their nations ended the conflict by dropping nuclear weapons on two industrialized cities. Those cities were not full of soldiers."

Cobalt-Black paused as if to allow response, but he was still poised in a way that showed he had more to sign. Ebony-Yellow and Ivory-Indigo nodded for him to continue.

"When nations are at war, it is nation against nation, and every individual member of the opposing nation is a combatant, even if only by silent ascent. In the early times, did not the Star direct the People to put to sword all those who occupied the Promised Land? They were not to let any live. And when they failed to follow the Star's directives, the wives they took of the heathens led them to false stars, and the children of the warriors they slew grew up to wish vengeance for the blood of their fathers."

"You sign like one of my teachers," signed Ebony-Yellow, "only that you do so bluntly and without euphemisms."

    Cobalt-Black nodded as if complimented.

"You sign only of the Old Times," signed Ivory-Indigo, "when blood was repaid in blood."

"And has it ever been otherwise?" retorted Cobalt-Black. "We sign treaties and we make proclamations, but the nature of mortals has not changed in millenia. We accept surrenders only when we can expect treatment in kind. We show mercy only because we expect it to be shown to us in turn. We create traditions of 'civility' to make us more comfortable that we live in a nice and pleasant world, but the reality is that it is only a facade to coddle the content populace of soft governments. The People have long known the harsh reality. We should not lie to ourselves, because of the fake morals of the Terrans."

"Yes, the People have long known harsh reality, and your arguments are not signed on shaky hands," agreed Ebony-Yellow, nodding slowly, "but I do not believe I care to live in your Empire. Please excuse me."

At the nodding of heads from the two masked men, Ebony-Yellow arose from her place, tossing the scraps and bones from her meal into the fire, and slowly retreated to the fringe of the clearing. After a few seconds of silence, the faint lilting melody played on a crudely made reed pipe could be heard coming from the shadows under one of the taller trees.

"She is weak," signed Cobalt-Black. Ivory-Indigo did not bother to reply, only lying back on a pile of dried moss he had improvised into a bedroll.

"I understand that the world that the Lady Willow of Dack comes from is devoid of high technology," signed Midnight-White, as she and several others of the candidates waited outside the monastery walls for a skimmer that would be picking them up for a run through an obstacle course.

Crimson-Teal sat up from where he had been lying back on the grass. "Perhaps that is just as well. Countless worlds have been despoiled in the name of industrial progress. We would all be much closer to the Star in spirit if we did not focus so much upon material comforts and technological marvels."

"And we would be prey for the first spacefaring race to come along," signed Cobalt-Black. "In fact, that is precisely what happened, if you should recall your history. However, it made us stronger, for we learned from our mistake, and expanded our reach to the stars. If we did not, we would be dead or enslaved."

"Sinai will not suffer that fate," signed Crimson-Teal, "if technology will not work there. The advantage would go to those who could live without it."

"Technology is not wholly useless there," countered Seafoam-Turquoise, "or we would not be taking tests under the watchful eye of the Lady Dack, for she would not be here."

Hazel-Blue signed, "I am not comfortable with that world. It is said that the natives practice magic. I have heard that the husband of the Judge is a witch."

"The term would be 'warlock'," corrected Ebony-Yellow. "And he is no warlock. Do not throw such terms around so easily of that which you know nothing about. Do not sign like a trouble-maker."

Hazel-Blue responded, "Very well, then, if you know more of such things than myself. Nonetheless, I sign truly when I state that I am uncomfortable with this place, and especially upon the import placed on it by prophesies made of late. Why is this world so important, yet we have heard nothing of it until now?"

"Because," signed Violet-Copper, "it is important to the Archon, and it is important to one who claims to be the Star. If you have any desire to take the place of the Archon, you should not wave it off as irrelevant simply because you have not had cause before now to learn of it. No one short of the Star may know all, not even the Archon. A good leader is one who is willing to humble himself for the sake of learning from others."

"Some knowledge is not to be learned," signed Hazel-Blue. "I do not like what I am hearing about this world. Of magic, of deities, of amazing powers wielded by the whims of mortals. These things appeal to those who wish to take the place of the Star."

"There you have it," responded Violet-Copper. "You have signed for yourself just why this world is so important. It matters not whether such things are true about this world for it to be important. What matters is that many believe it so. Now, if it should furthermore be true, then all the more reason to be concerned. You ask why it is important because you wish it to be unimportant."

Hazel-Blue nodded, leaning back. "True enough. I wish I had some of this magic, so I could wave my hand and make these problems go away. I can see the appeal already." He paused to make the sign of the Star as if a ward.

Midnight-White's ears wiggled under her cowl. "Do not worry. This magic only works on one world, far away. If greedy men go to seek power there, then perhaps we are all the better for it, to be rid of them!"

Crimson-Teal waved a hand, then signed, "Now, now! I want that world so I can be free from all the bother of noisy machines disturbing the peace and polluting the air! Put your greedy men somewhere else."

Cobalt-Black interjected, "You sign of greed as if it were the Cardinal Sin. Remember, 'Mammon is the root of all sorts of evil,' not, 'Mammon is the root of all evil'. Without the desire to better ourselves, we would not have progress."

Crimson-Teal sat up again. "'All sorts of evil' is condemnation enough for me. Do not play semantic tricks on us now!"

"Life is struggle," signed Royal-Bronze, who had until then been still, "and in conflict we are tested, and that which is fit will no doubt prevail. But we are not animals without souls, and we are not cogs in the wheel. If we are content to let mortal nature be as it may, then we need not believe in the Star. You as an individual are within your rights to take what is given you, and to strive for the best in your own life. You as a people are within your rights to expand and to struggle with the other peoples who vy for the same resources and territories. But a leader put in authority over many people must place boundaries on their behavior for the sake of society, just as those who observe a treaty recognize it as a restriction on their struggles with each other. Greed and the desire for power will always be with us, but it is the place of the authority to put boundaries on the pursuits of individuals for the sake of the values of the society as a whole."

Hazel-Blue blinked a few times, then signed, "Are your fingers sore now?"

Royal-Bronze nodded ascent, then got up to walk.

Violet-Copper got up as well, following after Royal-Bronze. Ebony-Yellow followed close after him, and Mauve-Puce tagged along a bit further away. Violet-Copper signed, "Do you mean, then, that it's a perfectly good thing for a people to conquer another, simply because they are able to, and no treaties have withheld them from doing so?"

Royal-Bronze cracked his knuckles, then signed, "If they seek to conquer another, they should not be surprised to be treated in kind."

Violet-Copper shook his head. "That is not an answer to my question. There are many peoples on the world of Sinai, and many resources there. Do you mean to imply that if we felt we would benefit from invading Sinai – and we were willing to deal with them retaliating – that it would be morally acceptable?"

Royal-Bronze shook his head, then signed, "Do not seek to trap me by making me answer a question in a way that might threaten our judge, since she comes from that world. The People have been charged with the spreading of the Light, and there are many pagan peoples on this 'Sinai' that partake in horrible acts. Some peoples are more open to reason than others. Some peoples only respect might. It is an offensive suggestion to Terrans, whose politicians like to say that all thinking species are created equal, but the fact is that all species are, by definition, different. I believe that the People are best. Any Khatta worth his whiskers should think that Khattas are the best. Every hammer-wielding Titanian is proud to be a Titanian. We would be poor examples of our species if we did not try to prove our convictions."

Ebony-Yellow interjected, "I do not share your viewpoint. My brethren are those who share my faith in the Star, not those who share my fur and spots."

Royal-Bronze nodded. "A worthy sentiment, no doubt, that should appeal to our judge. But the test is to determine who is most fit to rule the People, and the People are those who have fur and spots. Our judge believes in the Star, but she does not serve the Archon. She is a ruler in her own land. The Archon is a ruler over a people determined by birth and blood, not by faith. Only when the Star comes to rule over us all – and I do not believe that the Star has already come – will all peoples be ruled by a pure and impartial ruler, as one people in spirit."

Violet-Copper signed, "Not all families are determined by blood. There are outsiders who have been adopted into the People. And there are those born to us by blood who have been cast out as infidels and blasphemers. We are a People united by culture and history, faith and tradition. That we share the same bloodlines is a simple fact of the nature of the raising of families. We teach our offspring in our ways, and they receive what we have as an inheritence, unless they choose to break away. Look at the Terrans. The Karnor are as much Terran as the Humans."

Royal-Bronze nods. "And they are genetically programmed to be loyal to the Humans, and they have some of the blood of Humans running in their veins. That is hardly a winning example."

"Genetically programmed?" Ebony-Yellow signed uncertainly, but before she could get her answer, the skimmer crested the trees and began its gentle descent down to the awaiting candidates in their scattered clusters.

Today is 3 days before Landing Day, Year 29 of the Reign of Archelaus the First (6128)
