Locations: Chief Features of Savan

  • Beast Lands: The Beast Lands comprise a Forbidden Zone located within the Desolate Band. This barren, rocky area has only the barest essentials to sustain life, and is typified by "forests" of dry warpwood trees. Strange monsters are known to roam here, having the forms of various sapient species of Sinai, but feral and distorted, with small skulls, large claws, large fangs, and being even more depraved and mindless than the non-sapient creatures that Sinai's species are based upon.
  • Bromthen: Famed for the Bromthen Forest-Hog, which is found in abundance in its forests and swamps (but not restricted to that territory), this nation is found on the west coast of the Savan. The "Nagai/Jingai/mammal" hierarchy here has been replaced by one of "amphibian/reptile/mammal". It is dominated by "sea serpent" Nagas and Shiga types that parallel frogs, newts and other amphibians.

The Bromthen Flood Plain is a low area almost at sea level ... and at certain times of the year, it floods for miles, resulting in numerous "islands" formed when debris washes up in the cageroot trees.

The capitol, Bromthen City, is located along the coast, and instead of streets, there are waterways navigated by poled boats, occasionally passing under bridges that connect the buildings to each other. It's a very wet place.

  • Desolate Band: This is a strip that runs east to west across a large portion of the Savan Territories, typified by drought-stricken lands and -- in places -- desert. Even before the assassination of the Emperor-Potentate, the former Nagai Empire's presence here was almost nonexistent. There are numerous petty "kingdoms" set up around the oases and muddy rivers, and nomadic bands wander about with little to no interest in the edicts of the Emperor-Potentate. Giant non-sapient reptiles roam freely here, and are occasionally the object of sport by big-game hunters. If not for that, the outside world would probably leave the Desolate Band alone for the most part.
  • Jadai: The island nation of Jadai was once the eastern-most holding of the Nagai Empire, a stepping stone of sorts between the Savan and the continent of Lamu. Jadai is dominated by Kirigai, most of whom resemble humanoid versions of oriental dragons or ki'rin. The capitol city of Jashin is the major port for the island as well, and houses a respectable naval force, just across the waters from Nagai City.
  • Nagai: Also known as "Nagai Proper", for clarity, this territory is pretty much all that remains of what was once the Nagai Empire, now that the various territories have broken off and become independent. This is the most "urbanized" area of the Savan Territories, having several settlements within its borders, and the major metropolis of Nagai City, but it still contains quite a bit of wilderness as well.
  • Kilmanjar: This mountainous region is located on the northern part of the Savan Territories, touching the Sea of Himaat. This area is almost exclusively wilderness. The bad weather and tall mountains make most areas inaccessible to airships, and slow going by land. It is marked by tall forests largely untouched by civilization, and cool temperatures despite its nearly equatorial location (on account of the high elevation). Although it is not so listed on the maps, it has in effect become yet another holding of the Khattan Emirate, as the Himaatians freely engage in logging and mining operations in the northern part of this territory, and a Savanite colony has been set up here with the blessing of the Emir, serving as a sort of "buffer" against incursions from the Savan.
  • Xenea: This jungle territory on the west coast has been the center of many conflicts over the centuries and over the past few years. It is now an independent nation, ruled from the capitol port city of Safar by a Savanite Priest-King (or Priest-Queen), and Savanites live here freely, though there is also a significant Jingai population as well. The Xenean River winds its way through most of the territory, cutting through large canyons on its way to the delta at the relatively open coastline.

The capitol city in this mostly wilderness territory is Safar, located on the delta of the Xenean River. Although Safar was wiped out in a battle with the Knights Templar, the city has been rebuilt over the span of a few years, and already it has refurbished "tourist attractions" and is drawing in a few too-wealthy "adventurers" to check out its sights and distractions.

Further inland, there is a Forbidden Zone, within which are the ruins of an ancient city known as the City of Hands, which was once nestled within the Xenean Canyon. This city was destroyed ages ago as a result of a magical disaster, then rebuilt in recent history and made into a new home for free Savanites. It was destroyed again in 6099 RTR by the Nagai Empire and its allies, and while there are pilgrims who visit the site, and a religious few who have sought to erect shrines or archaeologists come to study the sites, it has largely been left abandoned.
