Awaiting the Queen's Order
(23 Jan 2003) Redmane is reunited with Sir Lefallon and Rachel. |
West Gate of the City
The walls of Mirari are whitewashed stone, luminescent in the moonlight and shadowed where age has caused some of the whitewash to flake away and reveal the gray stones. They stand perhaps fifty feet tall and are crenellated on top, with each block carved into the rough shape of an angel with wings out stretched to nearly touch one another. The massive wooden gate is fit into a stone archway that nearly reaches the top of the wall, at the top of a shallow flight of stairs.
From above where Ahearn appears to be flying through the air unsupported, ridden by Redmane, she enjoys a magnificent vantage of the walls of Mirari and its defenders, who point upward at her in amazement. Nearby is Nashita, whose magic supports Ahearn and his rider.
The troll army below appears to be the quarter or so that was left to keep the defenders busy, the rest having been launched in an effort to annihilate those who destroyed the siege engines. Redmane's passage left her ample time to observe tents trampled by the sheer press of trolls as they were rousted from their comfortable beds to join in the attack, though without her height, the defenders might have only seen distant churning and suspected strange things afoot.
Still, that is enough for them to have made the decision to awaken their reserves, for they are mustering in the square now. A small but familiar figure stands next to another, in heated discussion with the commander of the night watch as troops straggle in, yawning.
Nashita descends toward the troops with Ahearn and Redmane close behind, her glad cry of greeting an interruption to the now flustered-looking Sir Lefallon. Rachel looks up at them with some surprise as well, lowering the crossbow that she had instinctively raised.
"Nashita! Lady Redmane! Ahearn!" The young knight waves to them to come closer as they touch down, though his eyes track back to Nashita before returning to Redmane. "I'm trying to persuade Commander Craine that the Queen's going to order a sally to take advantage of the enemy confusion, once the messenger we sent her comes back, that you must have arranged some kind of disturbance. I think the others are in the Palace, talking about what to do next. What did you do out there?"
Dismounting Ahearn (and glad to be on the ground again) Redmane grins to Sir Lefallon and says, "We destroyed their siege engines, and so they sent quite a chunk of their forces after us. Sir Theodore's men and the forces of House May are being overwhelmed by then as we speak though! We need to launch an attack as soon as possible to draw some of them back to the main encampment. Is Nymuae here at the Palace as well?"
"Yes, yes she is," Lefallon answers. "She's with the others, at the Palace."
"Can you take to me them?" Redmane asks, then realizes she and Ahearn are still covered in ichor. "I promise to wipe my feet at the doorstep, but we need to act quickly."
Sir Lefallon nods. "Commander Craine," he says. "You'd better have your forces at the ready, we'll be back as soon as we can." With a glance back to Nashita trailing behind, the young knight hurries up the road that leads to the Palace's gates.
The commander nods to Sir Lefallon. "Do not think me unwilling to assist, young knight, but I am loath to risk the safety of our walls on an uncertain gamble." He bows to Lady Redmane and Ahearn. "I shall await the Queen's orders."
Redmane follows after the smaller knight, and raises an eyebrow towards Ahearn when she notices the djinn tagging along. "I guess she's not in so great a rush to return homeyet, after all," she notes to the Lord of Horses.
Nashita flits along behind Sir Lefallon, much to the young man's obvious embarrassment, to judge from the reddening of his ears. Her feet barely touch the ground as she glides alongside.
"Then again, perhaps she just doesn't want to return home alone," Redmane whispers to Ahearn at the sight of Sir Lefallon's blush.
