What To Do
(23 May 2002) In the Queen's sitting room, she explains to Alice just how complicated things really are in Mirari.
(Alice) (The Key)
Alice asks the Queen some of her questions about Mirari and the succession of the kingship, verifying that, yes, the King dies when the Year of his reign ends. This is one of the reasons Alice was sent away to the mortal realm, because while her older brother was at least a grown man, and the same for her father when he took the throne, they thought that it would be too much to ask of Alice that she ascend the throne as a mere child, doomed to die a Year later.

The Queen laments about the distance that has grown between herself and Lord April, and Alice posits that perhaps Lord April has been replaced by an impostor.

The Queen explains that there is no clear and easy solution to settling the matter of succession to the throne -- Mirari has many Rules that must be followed, but the present situation (not accounted for in any certain precedent) seems to require that at least one Rule be broken in order to favor another ... and the various parties cannot agree on which Rule is most important.
