Trebuchet Testing
(9 Jan 2003) Redmane infiltrates a camp of the enemy, and plays a dangerous game. |
As word buzzes around the camp and the goblins seem to be less enthusiastic about picking up their pace, Redmane removes an arbalest from the tower, insisting that "unnecessary weight" must be removed, to allow for more men to ascend it. She demands a test-firing on what she claims is a target, though it is suspiciously close to the central camp. The ogre foreman at last relents, trusting to the Ironbearer's "wisdom," and the goblins fire the catapult as commanded. The shot doesn't quite hit its mark, but it still smashes into some tents ... prompting a flurry of activity in the targeted camp.
Redmane, her work done here, hastily descends, praises the goblins for the accuracy of their machine, and announces that now she will go to the other engines to urge them to work harder - holding up this team as the example they must strive to live up to. The ogre foreman is a put surprised at the sudden desire on the Ironbearer's part to depart, but he sees it as a relief - one less trouble for himself. So, Redmane rides off on a glamoured Ahearn, while riders from the central camp descend on the siege crew with a vengeance. From a distance, Redmane sees the siege tower burst into flames, and while she briefly entertains the notion of riding back to fight, Ahearn persuades her to stick to her mission.
They ride on, encountering forces of May, and introduce themselves. She passes on word of Sir Theodore and of the Black Boat, so that they will know that allies are coming (and not to fire on them!) and agrees to stay and help fight the enemy.
