Log Entries: Tom's Treasure Hunt : Synopsis

(22 Aug 2001) Tom goes on a little adventure.

Tom, while cleaning the cupola windows at Harcourt Manor, finds a loose board, and underneath it a battered metal jewelry box, containing a rolled up paper that seems to be quite old ... and a map with an "X" on it, possibly marking the location of treasure! Tom figures out that the locations on the map actually correspond to locations in and around Ainigton, and follows the landmarks to Kia's Restoration, where he finds a possible contender for the "X" in the form of a railroad crossing sign hanging out front. However, the store is closed for the day, so he decides to investigate another location on the map -- one indicated by a leaping deer and a key. Outside town, he finds a deer crossing sign with a key taped to the back ... and the key can't have been taped there (by his best estimate) for all that long (certainly not having weathered so much as a single winter). Puzzled by this, Tom heads back home so that he'll get back before dark.

The next day, he heads back to Kia's Restoration, and encounters Agatha there, who is looking at cameras. With some reluctance, he shows Agatha the map, and then asks Ms. Black about jewelry boxes. He hears some footsteps on the floorboards, while Ms. Black goes to check on other possible boxes that the key might fit -- but as he goes to investigate, he doesn't see anyone -- just a suspicious swinging of the railroad crossing sign. When Ms. Black comes back, she has a small box that looks like a miniature treasure chest, and sure enough, the key fits. Inside, Tom finds what looks like a sextant, some golden coins, and some gems, and he asks Ms. Black how much she'll take for the box. She charges him only a penny -- which he gladly pays, taking his treasure home with him.

At home, he opens up the box, and finds that the "golden coins" are in fact chocolates wrapped in gold foil, and he's not certain about the authenticity of the gems -- though he supposes that they might be glass. As for the sextant, it seems real enough, and he resolves to find out how to use such a thing. He considers that perhaps Mr. Kuning was responsible for this little adventure, deliberately hiding the map where he might find it. Regardless, Tom is happy with his new find.
