The Jeruuh
(12 Jul 2001) That same day, Simon, Agatha and Tom explore the cave further.

While Rebecca and Alice enjoy the weather and lunch outside, Simon, Agatha and Tom resolve to explore the cave some more. They investigate a pile of debris in the center, and disturb a large creature that seems to have features suggesting a bear or a raccoon, but is neither. When it is directly marked by a flashlight beam, it seems to disappear entirely, leaving the children to wonder where it got off to ... though Simon seems inexplicably certain that it was a "Jeruuh" and that they disappear whenever they are directly seen. After further searching, they find a rotten piece of fruit, and a much more valuable item: a flute with a curious engraving on the side. After several tries, Tom manages to play a few notes on the flute, though he balks at the notion of trying to play this flute back at the Siege des Anges to see if it might do anything special. They also find a crescent-shaped earring, which Tom decides might be a nice present for Alice, who seems to like such things. With their prizes, the children leave the cavern for the time being, resolving to do some more investigation at the library.
