Siege of the Woods
Saturday (13 Sep 2001) The Mirari gang encounters ... yet more strangeness.
(Agatha) (Alice) (Baum Woods) (Elinor) (Simon)
(The Key) (Tom)
As Tom, Simon, Alice, Elinor and Agatha encounter a strange creature in the forest clearing, Elinor and Agatha seem to let on that they know more than the others do of what's going on here. The group opts to retreat, and Agatha explains her strange adventure from earlier, whereby a faerie by the name of Sir Tristan appeared in the "Siege of Wind", and took her to the land of Mirari, in an aborted attempt to meet the Queen. Agatha explains what she knows about the various Houses of Mirari, each one corresponding to a different month, and how Sir Tristan was from April, whereas they were attacked by leaf golems from House October. She also indicates that House April has minions in the forms of cats, and House October has minions who are ravens.

As for Elinor, her story is that she is not really "Elinor" at all ... but that she is a faerie as well, and from House October -- Rachel Antoine of the Golden Hawks. Tom, already reeling from having just met a genuine monster, is bowled over by this revelation, then hurt at Elinor's ruse. As they discuss the matter further, Agatha brings up the matter of an "Optikon", a device which allows one to see the true form of faerie creatures disguised by shape-shifting powers or glamours -- a camera -- and that Rebecca had one when she went to "Ruritania" ... and as Elinor indicates, Rebecca is not in "Ruritania" at all, but actually the faerie world.

They travel to Danzwyck Stables, still following the path on their initial errand to fetch Agatha's loaned horse in the hopes that it might help them better face the "Scare Crow" positioned at the Siege they just found in the clearing. What appears at first to be a grey gelding is actually the massive white warhorse, and Elinor reacts with surprise when she sees what she calls a "Knightsteed".

Tom considers whether they should continue to have anything to do with the affairs of the Houses of Mirari, fearing that they're all just pawns in some strange game, but the others insist that if they have the power to somehow change things for the better, then that they must attempt to do so.
