Rescuers and the Rescued
(9 Jan 2003) The Black Boat continues toward the Palace of All Seasons. |
Thomas, upon hearing that Simon has retreated to the catacombes, and about the frontal assault, fears that this isn't the Destroyer's style - rather, that it would be more his style to have something sneaky planned, and he fears that it may be that some of the old siege tunnels underneath the city might be opened up by someone from the inside. Princess Angel catches on to his worries as well. Rachel expresses some concern about the small number of forces to defend Mirari from these large armies, but Thomas strongly suggests to her that she needs to have faith in them - subtly drawing allusions to their little "experiment" that helped them find the city of Caer Sidi long ago.
As the Black Boat continues on, they witness a disturbance in the camp - a shot from a catapult that seems to be aimed at another part of the army, and then, a while later, forces descending upon the siege crew. The siege crew spots the Black Boat, and prepares to fire, despite the chaos going on down below. Thomas flings an oil-filled lantern onto the siege tower, and Rachel launches an expertly aimed flaming bolt - setting the siege tower on fire! She fires several other bolts, one of her shots managing to throw off the aim of a catapult, furthering the confusion as its load falls within the camp. As they drift on, Rachel reports overhearing, amongst the screams of the goblins, something about "fire-breathing griffins."
At last, the Black Boat makes it to the Palace of All Seasons. The Queen is reunited with her brother - her real brother - Lord April, and Princess Angel (adopting her guise once more as "Lady Jill") is praised for the success of her mission; she in turn praises Hannah for her role as her protector. The Queen welcomes to the Palace both the rescued and the rescuers, and offers them a place to rest, but Thomas is intent on immediately getting to work on the business of finding out where Simon slipped off to, and what he might be up to - before it's too late!
