At night, while staying at Oberia's house, Tom spends a moment with Rachel up on the roof, talking about what hope there might be for Mirari, and trying to figure out why exactly Tom and Redmane ended up in the world of mortals.

The next day, Oberia has news: a raven by the name of Avarre has been in the marketplace, asking after Lord Thomas the Explorer. Thomas decides to seek out this bird, and does so while accompanied by Rachel and Sir Lefallon. They receive a letter from Alice -- with an additional note from Agatha on the back. Thomas has reason to believe that his true enemy may not be found in the West after all ... but back in Mirari ... and very close to Alice.
