Quarrels and Private Worries
(18 Jul 2002) Tom, Agatha and Rachel have some time to talk during the night.
(Agatha) (Elinor) (The Key)
(Tom)
Redmane goes up to take over for Rachel for the night watch, finding that the latter girl has been practicing her crossbowman skills on a target. Rachel confesses to Redmane that she feels useless, as she has no special powers, and she is not even the seeress that she pretended to be in their games together in Ainigton. Redmane consoles Rachel, telling her that she still fills an important role -- as one who is still "normal" and "sane". Rachel finds this ironic, as once upon a time, she thought that she was the only one odd in the group.

They start talking about Thomas, and this apparently draws his attention, as he comes to join the group. The topic of Thomas's and Agatha/Redmane's transformations comes up, and whether these changes are good or bad. Rachel leaves with some embarrassment when the discussion turns personal. In private, Thomas confesses to Redmane that he has feelings for Elinor, though he does not think that it would "work out," given the difference in their ages. Redmane quashes some disappointment, and the discussion shifts to the matter of whether their respective "mortal" parents might have somehow had a role in Mirari ... and just what the identity of the Destroyer might be.
