New to Town
July 16 (6 Feb 2003) Alice and Agatha search for the Book.
(Agatha) (Alice) (The Key)
Alice and Agatha, accompanied by Ahearn and Kuon, return to Ainigton and the "mortal world," arriving at the Siege des Anges in the park. They use glamours to try to disguise their gear, and Agatha sheds most of her armor so that she won't look quite so conspicuous. Ahearn has the awkward role of trying to translate for Kuon - the horse translates for the dog! - a role which he is frustrated with, particularly since Kuon is trying to make recommendations about making collect telephone calls (a subject Ahearn is unfamiliar with).

Agatha figures it out, and makes a collect call to Mr. Kunig, using the phone number he had given her earlier. He confirms that he has been doing some research on Anastasia Harcourt; much of what he found out, the Mirari girls already know. He knows that there was another child playing the game with the Harcourts: Clarisse. When Agatha suggests that this might be Tom's grandmother, Clarisse Smith, Mr. Kunig confirms that she was the only "Clarisse" of an appropriate age in town. He'd tried to call her, but to no success, and suggests that the girls might pay her a visit.

So, Agatha and Alice go on (startling and impressing Jennifer Danzwyck on the way at the sight of a glamour-less Ahearn) toward the address that Mr. Kunig gave them for Mrs. Smith. They find Mrs. Smith out on the street, accompanied by a young man that she introduces as Mr. John Cortlynn. Agatha and Alice immediately accuse him of being Lord Eoin, the Destroyer, and he just looks politely bewildered, while Mrs. Smith chastises them for being so rude. They continue their accusations, but Mr. Cortlynn has his own explanations for why he has an interest in the legacy of the Harcourts: he indicates that he believes himself to be the illegitimate son of John Harcourt, and that his mother died at a young age.

Mrs. Smith suggests that they all go down to Foxworthy's, and talk about this over some root beer floats. Alice tries repeatedly to get Mrs. Smith to reveal where the books are that are hidden in the Siege des Anges, rather transparent in her attempts to get the books before Cortlynn -- and Mrs. Smith is suspicious at the sudden "helpfulness" of the girls. She's also concerned when Alice shows off the mirror that once belonged to Anastasia, and furthermore when she claims to be Mr. Kunig's daughter, and a descendant of Anastasia. At the last, Agatha goads Ahearn into introducing himself to Mrs. Smith.

This is too much for Tom's bewildered grandmother. She faints, caught by Mr. Cortlynn.
