Navigating the Labyrinth
(23 Jan 2003) Tom encounters Simon - the real Simon - underneath the Palace of All Seasons.
(Simon) (Tom)
Thomas heads into the cellars of the palace, and finds a trap door leading down into a labyrinth of tunnels. There, he discovers Simon searching the passages - for something - and musing aloud to himself about what people may have built these tunnels, and what their fate may have been, once the Lords and Ladies came. Thomas at last reveals himself; Simon tries to sway him to his side, arguing that Lord Eoin has been forced into the role of villain by the demands of the Rules, and only by changing the Rules - by undoing all of them - can the cycle be ended. Thomas is reluctant to consider that all the Rules must be changed, for he remembers the chaos that Melchizedek described. They reach a sort of truce, agreeing to look together for the Book of Historie ... though Thomas is wary that they might be tracked ... by Lord Eoin, or even by Rebecca or anyone else intent on keeping the status quo. They reach a doorway with no evident way of opening -- with a lion's head above the archway, two paws at the base, and a remarkable resemblance to certain mirrors found in both Mirari and Ainigton.
