Making Travel Plans
(27 Dec 2002) On board the Black Ship, the heroes discuss what to do next - and Melchizedek explains more about Mirari's origins. |
Melchizedek is aware of how Mirari's past as well as its present is reshaped by the playacting of the children, though he is unique in being able to remember something of the pasts that once were, as if they were dreams. So many changes have been wrought that he has trouble distinguishing the present "truth" from the others, when it regards the earlier histories, but he is certain that Riordan was originally fey ... and that though it was not his intention, making the Rule of the Year led to his "passing into Historie." As they found, not everything about their own world happened as they had intended, but Melchizedek is certain that even a flawed reality is better than the absolute chaos that once reigned. He is also certain - despite suggestions from Redmane and Thomas that the Destroyer might be a manifestation of this older Chaos - that what the Destroyer wishes for is total and complete destruction, something even more complete than the wildness that once existed.
They debate how to deal with this threat, but the ultimately come to the conclusion that their paths must lead them to the Palace. Thomas wishes to find out what happened to Simon, and the others wish to see the Queen and see what she thinks - and to announce Lord April's return to the lords and ladies. Rather than traveling together, they agree to have Redmane go out on the back of Ahearn ahead, to herald their arrival. The Black Boat will go behind them, as quickly as the Djinn can manage, and lastly Sir Theodore and his troops will continue to head toward the Palace of All Seasons.
As they make preparations, Hannah and Thomas head out to find the Djinn.
