Alice, Agatha and Kuon follow Lady Nymuae (Rebecca) to the Siege of Stone and Water. Through Nymuae's magic, they are able to pass through the lake to Mirari. There, it is winter, and Alice's winter coat seems unable to provide her with enough protection from the cold, so Nymuae casts a spell to warm them all up. They journey to a lake, where a Leviathan transports them underwater (able to breathe and speak, again, through magic), and they travel to Nymuae's Spire. Inside, they visit her laboratory, and examine the photographs from the "Optikon". In the photographs, they see that Alice appears wholly as Princess Angel, Tom appears as a double-image divided between his real-world self and identity as Explorer Thomas, Agatha has a ghost-like image of Lady Redmane behind her, but Simon's appearance is strangest of all: He has ghost-like images of his normal-world self, Simon the Jester, and Sir Lefallon, but the strongest image is of a dwarfish, vaguely felinoid creature. Nymuae indicates that this must be Simon's true form. Agatha resolves that they should not tell Tom about this, for fear that Tom will push Simon away ... and that House April (which they assume is where Simon's allegiance must lie) might send some other spy instead.
