Tom visits his grandmother, and asks her some questions about his family, starting with his grandfather, and how she met him. His grandfather, Thomas, it turns out, was something of an adventurer (a pilot), and looked very much like Tom is growing up to be, except that he had lighter hair. Tom's grandmother apparently also played with the Harcourts, and took part in games involving Mirari -- She was "Lady February", and she verifies that Bryant played "Lord Bram", and that they pretended that a hand mirror was a magical gateway to Mirari.
