Going Up?
Monday (14 Sep 2001) Tom is paid a visit by Simon while working on a project.
(Baum Woods) (Simon) (Tom)
Tom works on his "secret" tree house in the woods, which presently consists of a single platform and a partially assembled (and quite complex) winch-operated elevator. His mother arrives, bringing lunch, and she informs Tom that Simon has been out at Danzwyck Stables, asking after him -- Tom gives his mother permission to tell Simon how to find the tree house. His mother leaves, and shortly after, Simon arrives, though he is unable to actually find the tree house until Tom reveals his position. Simon demonstrates his own aptitude at climbing trees by scrabbling up to the platform. Tom shows off the elevator that he made with his father's help, and together they finish the assembly of it, and test it out -- with a slightly bumpy initial trip to the bottom, and a less eventful ride back up. During the course of this, Tom shares with Simon his misgivings about recent developments in their "adventures", and his feelings that he can no longer trust Elinor, and possibly not even Agatha ... though he concedes that he still considers them to be his friends. They both plot on future escapades to undertake, and work on the tree house some more.
