Children of Cerridwen
Redmane confronts the pack elders and is reunited with Thomas
(Legends of Mirari) (Redmane) (Thomas)
()
Erzsebet brings Redmane to the crumbling city of Abnehmenvolf, where the last of the wolves make their home. The wolf-woman pretends to be the knight's captor, and warns her about showing any kind of aggression - which is hard when a belligerent wolf-man confronts them.

The situation is defused (somewhat) by Erzsebet, and she brings Redmane to the ancient Temple of Cerridwen where the pack elders now live. There is some confusion among them because of Erzsebet's supposed about-face on her ideals, until she explains that she hasn't changed her mind at all; she's there because Redmane wanted to see them.

This gives Redmane a chance to speak, and she recites an ancient rite of Cerridwen to get their attention. She pleads for them to release the ones they've taken before it's too late, and then enjoins them to submit to the Lord of December. This last suggestion is too much for the wolves, who see the Lord as the betrayer of their people. Redmane is sent to a holding cell until the elders can decide what to do for her.

In the cell she finds a wounded, iron-collared wolf. When a woman comes to tend to him, she recognizes her from the Sigil of Memory's vision and figures out the wolf is Thomas. The woman asks Redmane why Thomas would turn back to the lake to save them, and why he preaches but then does not defend himself when the pack turns on him. Redmane tries to explain Thomas' motivations, but doesn't make much progress. She learns about a missing peace delegation that was sent to Lord December Years ago to rectify things - the wolves had given his family the power of transformation, but then seemed to be forgotten and were being pushed further and further by fey encroachment.

Thomas shows himself to be awake after the wolf-woman leaves. He fills in Redmane on what he found out before; that the wolves really were betrayed. The knight claims that every side in a conflict believes they are in the right, but it doesn't give the wolves an excuse to abduct people and steal their lives.
