Artifacts of Old
(14 Oct 2001) Alice, Agatha and Elinor muse over the strange letters they've found.

Elinor is dumbfounded over the contents of the letters, as they confirm what she long thought to be myth: that the battles with the Year's End and its minions -- the Jruuh -- were indeed actual occurrences so long ago. It appears that the flute obtained from Ryland's junk pile and the hand mirror obtained from the dragon may well be powerful artifacts of great age.

Alice brings another twist to the conversation, as, when Tom is mentioned, she produces a letter from him, in which he bemoans his inability to perform adequately, and withdraws himself from further adventures. This disheartens Elinor but angers Agatha, who pledges not to let him "hide in his tree".

The girls head outside to visit Kuon and Destre for a change of pace, introducing Elinor to them, and Elinor has a few things to say about the nature of shapeshifters, shapechangers, and the fey use of glamours -- and how those in the forms of animals in Mirari often communicate in an "unspoken language". Destre seems to be interested in the letters, and Alice draws them out for the horse to read.
