Allies and Adversaries
(10 Feb 2002) Tom meets an old friend.
(The Key) (Tom)
Tom is awakened by the sound of an approaching bird, and goes out to find that a messenger hawk is being pursued by what looks like the animated corpse of a raven. Tom calls the hawk to him, and strikes down the raven with his sword when it pursues. He decides to dispatch the undead raven rather than risking the chance that it might escape, and then examines the message the hawk brought: a magical disc enchanted by Nymuae, bearing a message from both Agatha and Nymuae and some gathered research material. Simon is awakened by all this as well, and they are both interrupted by the arrival of a stranger -- the ghost of Randall, they soon discover. Randall tries to persuade Tom to go on alone, without Simon or Rachel to slow him down, but Tom refuses to abandon his friends. Randall indicates that he never received a proper burial, and asks Tom to see that it is done -- and then reveals that one of the consequences of this is that he is now a wraith in the service of the Jack of Hearts. Randall fights with Tom, and though Tom is greatly torn by the decision he has to make, he holds Randall at bay long enough for Simon to strike a "killing" blow ... though as Randall fades away, there's no evidence that he was even there at all -- and his parting words suggest that, as a wraith, he will "rise" to meet Tom again in the future.
