Based on the sky island of Caroban, the College Esoterica is a center for organized magical study on Sinai, dividing the arts of Sinai magic into various "spheres" in which wizards specialize. To be a spellcaster without sanction by the College Esoterica on Sinai is to invite trouble, as the College jealously guards its position as the keeper of the secrets of the mystical arts. Once used to refer to the collective organization of colleges and guild halls devoted to the instruction in the ways of magic on Sinai, with its largest bases of operation being located in Rephidim, Babel and Nagai. With the attacks on the College Esoterica in Rephidim, the utter destruction of the Guild Hall in Babel, and attacks on the College in Nagai, it was determined that the Collegia should consolidate into a single campus on the sky island of Caroban, asserting its neutrality in political matters, and separating itself from being within the borders of any one nation. The term "Collegia Esoterica" is officially defunct, but is still used from time to time, out of force of habit, to refer to the collective body of mages.

In the land of Chronotopia, police duties are held not only by the guards of each town, but also by a class of law enforcers known as Commisars. Commisars are entrusted with a great deal of authority in enforcing the law beyond the boundaries of any one city or county within Chronotopia.

A legendary quartet of assassins, each of whom was associated with one of the four directions of the compass rose: Palao Alto, the Musician, of the North; Juniper Jade, the Philosopher, of the West; Lady Martinette, the Puppeteer (or the Consort), of the South; and Shikouju, the Sable Palm (or the Silver Blade), of the East.

Coolects are small insects that resemble butterflies, which are best known for shedding large amounts of a glitter-like powder for a time after emerging from their shiny cocoons. Coolect powder is used in the making of inks and some other products, though quite a few coolects are required to produce any appreciable amount. Newly hatched coolects are sometimes released at festivities for aesthetic purposes, and are fairly popular with Vartans.

The Coruscant Fiero is a flower that blooms only briefly in the wintertime, renowned for its bright colors ranging from yellow to red, supposedly suggesting flame.

Creens are small serpentine lizards with feathered wings and sometimes tail-plumes in bright, festive colors. They are found in many colors and varieties in tropical areas, especially in the jungles. They are found on all of the major continents, not constrained to a particular region. They are insectivores, and some varieties are capable of being taught to mimic sounds, much like parrots, hence making them somewhat popular as exotic pets for those who can afford them.

Some time ago, an Exile arrived on Rephidim, claiming to be part of a fellowship of paladins, of which he claimed to be the head of, and it was rumored that he also happened to be the sole member. He was resistant to any form of authority, and it's unclear just what this "order" stood for, except that its member(s) were warriors who supposedly had phenomenal magical powers as well.

[Obscure information that just about nobody knows about] A mysterious magical item that arrived with an exile claiming to be a knight. Little is known of this item. It was stolen before it could be properly examined by the Temple.

Cuirassiers are armored foot-soldiers (their armor known as "cuirasses") in the service of the Gallisian armed forces. They, along with the mounted Chevaliers, are well known for their highly ornamental armor, and their courty notions of chivalry. Gallis does see armed conflict with Chronotopia on occasion, typically caused by perceived offenses against the Gallisians during diplomatic functions, so the Cuirassiers do see some action, but they spend as much or more time focusing upon etiquette and courtly abilities than actual combat prowess.

"Dagh" is a common curse word with origins that the average user of the name is not in the least bit aware of. The true origins have been lost to time, but "Dagh" figures into many legends as a "dark god" or "lord of the underworld", and generally as a very powerful and malignant entity. Some legends describe Dagh as a very powerful (and evil) wizard from a time in history closer to the Expedition, during the age that magic was supposedly first discovered on Sinai. "Dagh" also figures into colorful phrases and exclamations such as "Dagh's dentures!" or names of forboding locations, or strange rock formations, such as "Dagh's Tower". Somewhat controversially, Dagh is also recognized as the name of a recently discovered eleventh planet in the Primus System, associated with the Sphere of Illusion (Illusion, Sphere of). However, an explorer dubbed the planet "Quicksilver", and since this name is not considered a foul word in any known language or culture, it is often used as an alternate name for the world. Presently, little is known of this planet, save that it is accessible through the Gateway Tower and that it appears to be a reflective orb.

Darkside is the name given to the shadier portion of Rephidim, where law enforcement is practically nonexistent, and all sorts of crime and vices can be found. While Darkside is ostensibly under the authority of the Temple, in reality it is nearly autonomous. For a time, it was in effect ruled by a crime lord known as "Faraon the Friend" - a golden dragon that resided in the Jade Palace (also known as "Faraon's Dome"), in Underside - the flip side of Rephidim. However, a concerted military assault following the kidnapping of the Captain-Astromancer resulted in the destruction of Faraon's base of power, and forced his flight from Rephidim. Now, it seems that Darkside's crime organizations are crushed, divided into petty factions squabbling over territory, since Faraon had succeeded in crushing the other major power years before - the Assassins' Guild.

[Not common knowledge] In regards to Bosch, Degenerates are beings that were once living, sapient creatures, but who -- for one reason or another -- succumbed to the corrupting magicks of Bosch, and are more or less bound to it for the remainder of their existence. Bosch, a realm of wild magic and magical "illusion", can be quite harmful to those who enter it. Aside from the possibility of simply being slain by its inhabitants, there are numerous ways in which one's form might be altered in such a way that -- while one might be sustained by the magic of Bosch, where physics seem to only sometimes apply -- one would not be able to survive for long outside of this Forbidden Zone. This appears to not only be a physical but a mental transformation, as persons with strong wills and strong faith have been known to be able to resist ... at least, for a time. The process is greatly accelerated if one makes the mistake of consuming anything while in Bosch. After all, the sustenance one receives from food or drink of illusory origin is not real and physical. A person sustained on food and drink in Bosch for a prolonged time (and nobody really knows how long a "prolonged time" actually is) would eventually have much of his or her physical form replaced by magical substance ... a magical substance that would disintegrate once the person was removed from Bosch. Therefore, Degenerates are persons who have reached a state where they may be weakened by leaving Bosch ... or might simply disintegrate outright. There may be hope for a Degenerate in the earliest stages ... but even something so simple as eating a single piece of illusory fruit, or taking a sip of illusory water can open the door for Bosch's magicks to take over the victim's body in insidious ways. Furthermore, being a Degenerate does horrible things to one's sanity.

The Desolate Band is a name given to a strip that runs from coast to coast across the northern midsection of the Savan Territories, along the equator, marked by expanses of desert and near-desert, occasionally broken by clusters of life to be found along the scarce rivers. There are sub-regions which have their boundaries within this expanse, but they are generally of little import to the outside world. Officially, the Desolate Band was once part of the Nagai Empire, though it never had much physical presence at all there. In addition to the harsh climate, the Desolate Band is also well known for the various types of non-sapient reptiles that roam this region, many reaching legendary sizes (and degrees of ferocity). Fortunately, they're also known for being incredibly stupid. |
