The Captain-Astromancer is arguably the single most powerful person on Sinai, or at least potentially so. He is the head of the Bridge, which in turn governs the Temple, and thus all of Rephidim ... and which has a great deal of influence over Sinai in general. The years are measured by the reign of the current Captain-Astromancer.

Sky island serving as site of College Esoterica since New Year's Day 8, 6100 RTR. The sky island was barely habitable, but of large size, and follows erratic movements all around the globe of Sinai. After the catastrophic events that led to large scale devastation of the Collegia Esoterica on the surface (including the utter destruction of the Guild Hall in Babel) and attacks upon the College in Rephidim, the leadership of the Collegia decided to move to neutral territory, and to reaffirm the College's status as being outside of political boundaries (even though its individual members work for the various powers of Sinai). The sky island of Caroban moves erratically about the globe, making it difficult to find except for those with magical powers - or those who meet up with it at prescribed points, as Chaos Mages and Seers occasionally predict its movements and make this knowledge available for those who would visit to seek the College's services. The island itself is devoted to the College, a significant portion taken up by classroom buildings, laboratories, offices and dormitories, though there are also some open grounds (primarily for practice), and a small area devoted to living quarters for the support staff. There are also guest rooms for visiting alumni who occasionally have business on Caroban, distributed amongst the grounds of the various Spheres.

(Not common information outside of Nordika) Bosch is by no means a tourist location (except perhaps for the pilgrims to the Sanctuary of Order) but one of its sites more legendary to outsiders would be the Cascades of Fire, located near its border with Chronotopia, near the Living Gates. The Cascades look like numerous "waterfalls" of liquid fire, visible for a great distance across the blighted valleys of Bosch. It is believed that the touch of the Cascades can destroy even the most potent of magical devices, and hence some quests have been undertaken by Landsknechts or Knights Templar to have some evil artifact destroyed by dropping it into the Cascades. (Even if it weren't so, no one is likely to go fishing into the Cascades to retrieve it!)

(Not common information outside of Nordika) The Celestial Order is a monastical order of Chronotopia's version of the veneration of an entity known as the "Star", the holy sign of this Order being a five-pointed stylized star that looks like a five-toothed cogwheel. The monks of the Celestial Order, among other things, are fiercely devoted to the combat of the forces of chaos as represented by Bosch. As such, they have a strong dislike for magic, but, even so, they have an attitude of "fight fire with fire", some members of their order studying a select sub-set of the Sphere of Spirit, the Sphere of Chaos and the Sphere of Shadow, specializing solely in spells of magic detection and magic dispelling. Some monk-mages who are able to master all of the spells across these Spheres refer to it as a new "Sphere of Negation", though such is not recognized by the College Esoterica or any other major magical body as a true Sphere. In light of this, the Celestial Order has a quirky relationship with the College Esoterica, and also has some dealings with the Technopriests of Rephidim Temple.

The Cervani (alt plural: "Cervanis") are deer-like digitigrade (hoofed) humanoids mostly found in the woodland regions of Nordika, and occasionally southward toward Himar. Some have human-like head hair, though a majority do not. Otherwise, they have human-like hands, and abilities and attributes largely within human ranges. Cervani are predominant in the country of Chronotopia. "Krozite Cervani" are a sub-strain in which human-like "manes" are most common, found in the small Nordikan nation of Kroz, especially in the Diamante Principality (which is ruled by a Cervani royal family). The males, particularly older ones, grow large "racks" (antlers) on their heads, which are shed occasionally and regrown. It is said that one can tell how old a Cervani is by how many points are on the rack ... but this is a very inexact "science", and unreliable. Many Cervani are known to have a certain mental resistance to magical effects, perhaps borne of their tendency to be found in areas close to the Forbidden Zone of Bosch.

The Sphere of Chaos, one of the recognized twelve Spheres of magic by the College Esoterica, deals with abstracts of chance and circumstance, whether by trying to divine the chances of something happening, or by trying to subtly increase or decrease such chances. Most of the magicks ascribed with Chaos can be described as "blessings" or "curses", and it is rarely an exact science. The Sphere of Chaos is also useful for the dispelling of magicks from other Colleges. Chaos Mages have no agreed-upon traditional color for their robes. Their rune is "The Burst", or "The Explosion", which is also the rune for the planet Fortunatis. The Sphere of Chaos is, according to the traditions of Rephidimite scholarship, closely associated with the Sphere of Air (Air, Sphere of), and diametrically opposed to the logical and orderly Sphere of Mind (Mind, Sphere of).

The Chevaliers, along with the Cuirassiers, comprise the bulk of the Gallisian armed forces -- or, that is, the organized part. (In times of actual war, they rely heavily on levies of peasants equipped with make- shift weapons, as fodder.) Like the Cuirassiers, the Chevaliers are known for their notions of chivalry and for their highly ornamental armor (and decorative caparisons on their well-trained drokar mounts). On occasion, great jousting festivals are held, a frequent attraction for visitors to Gallis, during which Chevaliers compete to show their prowess in various contests -- the greatest being the jousting tournament itself -- on occasion even against outsiders from other lands. The Chevaliers are known for being excellent drokar riders, though a great deal of their training is focused more upon showmanship, rather than practical tactics ... so they do not provide a significant threat to the neighbors of Gallis.

(not common knowledge outside Babel and religious circles) One of the Sabaoth Seven, but not considered one of the original Sabaoth Six -- demon-warriors bound to the service of the ruler of Ashdod as well as the Seven Sisters. Chezek is depicted as the least imposing of the Sabaoth Seven, as a mutant Eeee with chibix-like features. (Considering that chibix bear at least a superficial resemblance to Eeee anyway, Chezek is basically depicted as an especially pathetic and comical-looking Eeee with a chitinous covering.) In tales in which Chezek is included, the chibix-Eeee has no combat abilities to speak of, and is a cowardly thief and spy for the group. Chezek is sometimes associated with Barada, since chibixes are sacred to her, but his habit of being a chatterbox who occasionally thoughtlessly blabs secrets does not endear him to his mistress.

Chibix are nocturnal quasi-arthropods that fly on somewhat bat-like wings, and feed on fruits and seeds, found scattered across the globe, though mostly in more temperate climates. They are shelled creatures that bear some remote resemblance to bats, and, indeed, in Rephidim Standard, when one refers to "bats" in the generic, if one is not referring to an Eeee, one is likely referring to one of these creatures. While chibix wings are very fragile, the creatures themselves are shelled, and have some ability to regenerate (slowly), making them fairly hardy. They tend to be about the size of true bats, though there are rumors that in some regions they may reach truly legendary wingspans. In the Ashdod Territories, they are raised as a food staple by the Eeee. Chibix raised for food have their wings plucked - in part so that they cannot fly away, but also because a flightless chibix generally does nothing but sit and eat, and quickly its fatty hump grows significantly in size. Some Eeee nobles consider it a delicacy to pluck the pry loose the shell of a chibix and eat from its fatty hump, while the creature shrieks loudly, making a "pleasing" sound. Chibix with their wings left intact are sometimes kept as pets, though they are not known for being terribly bright. (And if they misbehave, they make a nice snack.) In myth, chibix often serve as messengers for the Goddess of Secrets, Barada.

According to Nagai myth and legend, the Chiga are demonic beings, resembling the serpentine Nagai, but possessing only a single clawed hand (and even this can melt away into the body, leaving the Chiga to look like a true serpent). The Chiga are malevolent and only occasionally "mischievous" beings, possessed of various strange powers, depending upon the story, with abilities such as invisibility, limited shape-shifting (typically into the forms of non-sapient, small creatures), and "phasing" through solid objects. Also according to legend, they are nigh-invulnerable, except when attacked with weapons made from the wood of a slightly rare tree found in the southern Savan, the Thistlebark Tree. The same name also applies to a type of jungle-dwelling insect (collectively "chigai" or "chigas") to be found in the Savan, well known for attacking the unwary in swarms, capable of bringing down small prey with their bites -- or being a considerable nuisance to larger foes. Sap from the Thistlebark Tree has properties in repelling and killing these pests, leading to much speculation about their relationship to the mythical "Chigai". Alas, it is unknown whether the name for the bug or the "demon" came first.

Iron and steel are exceedingly rare on Sinai. Therefore, most armor that is found is of hardened leather ... or else of "chitin", made of pieces of very tough shell. The primary sources for chitin for use in constructing armor are the hives of the Zelaks. However, it is not unheard of that armor might be constructed from (hopefully) cast-off shells of Vykarins, though the latter type of chitin is considered inferior.

Chronotopian Eggs are perhaps the most widespread curio to be acquired from the nation of Chronotopia. They are, in short, pocket watches, made of intricate parts with a certain degree of redundancy in systems, reknowned for accuracy even on the surface of Sinai (though this is greatly tested if one decides to take them into Forbidden Zones or other areas of high magical activity). The name comes from the tradition of making the devices shaped like little eggs, either with a glass window on one side revealing the watch face, or else having the egg hinge open to reveal its interior. It is also common to have glasswork making the intricate gear-work inside visible, due to the novelty, and for the "shell" to be decorated with inlaid designs and/or hand-painted (and enameled) scenes. Each one is hand-crafted, and there is a great deal of variety in additional "features" given by the designers.

A technologically advanced nation on the continent of Ai in the region of Nordika, bordered by Bosch on the south, Gallis and Sylvania on the west, Titania on the east, and the Vykarin Wastes to the north. Chronotopia has trade with Rephidim, but, largely due to constant warfare with the primarily lupine Titanians and barbarian tribes of Vykarins, canines and lupines tend to face certain prejudice within Chronotopian borders. Slavery is illegal in Chronotopia, and for a long time, Savanites were simply not permitted, as the leadership did not want to become a haven for runaway slaves and possibly spark conflict with the major powers of Sinai. However, with the recognition of Xenea, the collapse of the Nagai Empire, and the end of slavery in Rephidim, this policy has been rescinded. Nagai and many other beings more often found in warmer climates are fairly rare in this area, given its northern location, but otherwise the nation has a fairly diverse mix of races - primarily human, Korv, Cervani, Rhian, and a strain of black Khatta. Despite this, it has a tendency to display xenophobia and even a bit of fascism at times in its dealings with outsiders. While Chronotopia relies heavily on machinery and showcases myriads of great clock towers, it is no more advanced than steam power, and even that is highly unreliable due to quantum uncertainties on the surface of the planet. In recent years, though, significant advances have been made, especially with the advent of contact with civilizations on Abaddon and the greater availability of Abaddonian iron. The language of Chronotopia is Bosch (oddly enough, the same name as Chronotopia's worst enemy, the Forbidden Zone to the south) although Rephidim Standard is in wide usage.

For ages, the City of Hands seemed to exist only in legend, a ruined city located somewhere in the Xenean jungles, overflowing with gems, but haunted by ghoulish spectres and strange phenomena where magic runs wild or is suppressed entirely. One particularly colorful notion about the city was that the buildings themselves are alive, able to sprout hands to catch the unwary, and that the buildings themselves could speak, telling secrets of old. Eventually, the actual City of Hands was discovered by an expedition sponsored by the Rephidim Temple, but it was believed to be destroyed later. For a time, it served as a secret haven for escaped Savanite slaves, ruled over by a mutant leader alternately known as Third-Vision, Third-Eye, or Jezebel. Eventually, the City of Hands no longer maintained its secrecy, and openly proclaimed its existence as a place for free Savanites, but it was overrun in 6099 RTR by the forces of the Nagai Empire, and destroyed. In recent years, there have been attempts by the people of the newly formed independent state of Xenea to restore the City of Hands, though not necessarily to inhabit it again. Replicas of some of the more noteworthy structures of the City of Hands can be found in the port city of Safar, in the theme park known as Safarland.

Yet another fruit produced by the floating sky gardens. Even when deflated, this particular fruit still has enough pulp to make a meal of, and is considered a worthwhile find by sky sailors. |
