(race) Niton
NIGH-tohn
(not common knowledge outside of Lamu)

The Niton are a cold-blooded reptilian race, humanoid in general shape, but lizard-like in appearance. (A Niton can be easily mistaken for a Shiga.) So far, Niton have only been discovered in the vicinity of Sunrise City in Lamu, and are characterized by having very accelerated (and very short) life spans, going through their life cycles in a matter of weeks.

(race) Nohbakim
noh-bah-KEEM
The Nohbakim are scavengers found on the Sea of Sand in the Himaat Desert, each one a "chimera", in that, while more or less a basic humanoid, each one sports a random selection of features that suggest one race or another, in a dizzying array of colors. This one may have feathers, this one scales, another both and a beak and some vestigal wings and three tails and a few horns sticking out here and there for good measure. They defy easy classification as a "race", though they all share a high tolerance of toxic substances ... quite probably because their villages are built around the "Deadwater" oases of the desert, which prove harmful or even fatal to most who drink of the waters ... and which spawn strange plants which are as bizarre and varied as the Nohbakim themselves.

The Nohbakim sail across the sea of sand on large Sand Triremes and smaller Kooshkie Sleds, living a scavenger life and often a violent one as they fight amongst themselves and other desert denizens over scant resources. Scavengers as they are, their jewelry often consists of trash that they treat like treasure, and their mish-mash of patchwork attire (unique to each Nohbakim's body form) gives them an often colorful appearance.

(location) Noh
NOH
Ruined city located on the eastern side of the Himaat Desert, reputed to be the home of the mutated scavengers known as the Nohbakim. The city's origins are unclear, as the location is far away from any known oases or rivers, suggesting that it may have been built in a time before the desert expanded to its current boundaries.

(location) Nordika
NOHR-dee-kah
Name referring to an area of land north of Himar, on the continent of Ai, encompassing several smaller countries and territories, with climates tending toward the cool to downright cold depending on the time of year and the latitude.

The main territories encompassed in this region would include:

  • Bosch - a large Forbidden Zone dominated by wild magic
  • Chronotopia - an urbanized and industrialized country
  • Gallis - dog (Gallee, Gallah) and peacock (Kujaku) homeland
  • Kroz - feudal kingdoms, ancient ruins, monsters and treasure
  • Lake of Langour - inland sea inhabited by sea monsters
  • Northern Sea - cold sea inhabited by carnivorous snarks
  • Olympia - once magnificent kingdom, now in ruin
  • Sylvania - ruined nation, mostly wilderness with scattered settlements, and lots of monsters
  • Titania - wasteland dominated by machine-making barbarians
  • Tursdi - small cluster of feudal states
  • Vykarin Wastes - frigid tundra to the north
  • Wandering Roams - steppes and plains populated by wandering nomads
  • Of these lands, the Vykarin Wastes form a border to the north, blending into the Wandering Roams to the north and east. Chronotopia's northern border touches that of the Vykarin Wastes, and it also has Titania bordering it on the east. (Titania also borders the Vykarin Wastes.) Bosch is to the south of Chronotopia and Titania, bordering both lands in places, being located in a range of mountains that runs through both countries.

    (organization) Offworld Legion
The Offworld Legion is an armed force serving an alliance between the Abaddonian Kampfzengruppe and the Khattan Emirate of Sinai. Formed primarily to operate on the various Gateway Worlds, it sees some small action on Abaddon and Sinai as well -- particularly on Abaddon, where the Offworld Legion is sometimes employed to fight off hostile fauna in the disease-ridden canals that criss-cross the otherwise desert planet.

The Offworld Legion is largely comprised of criminals that have been offered a chance at amnesty in lieu of execution ... provided they manage to survive a tour of duty with the Legion and perform admirably. There are also a number of volunteers as well -- typically outcasts and ne'er-do-wells who haven't any marketable skills other than being able to shoot or stop a bullet. The Legion tends to have a high turnover rate, especially amongst first-year members.

    (item) (fauna) Oghnoigh
    OHG-noyg
The Ognoigh is a close relative of the Squibbit, being also found primarily in the Savan, though less often part of the diet of the Nagai. Rather, it is valued more for its peculiar property of changing color when pressure is applied to different parts of its squishy length.

It even retains these properties for a limited time after death, and thus a minor amusement is often made for children by treating oghnoigh bodies to negate toxins in their bodies (but also effectively destroying any nutritional value in the process) and preservatives. Naga children can then slap the oghnoigh bodies silly, producing interesting color patterns, until they "wear out".

Oghnoighs can also be fashioned into jewelry before their bodies dry out, and it's a common belief that jewelry will reflect the "mood" of the wearer, since it seems to react to body temperature as well as pressure. This aspect of the ognoigh is exploited mostly in exports. Nagas, after all, are cold-blooded.

It is believed that oghnoighs reproduce by breaking off into smaller oghnoighs. Thus, they're built to take a lot of punishment before they're ready to reproduce.

    (location) Old City
The "Old City" on Rephidim refers to a ruinous area of Rephidim City that has long remained unpopulated ... except by the inhabitants of the Moz Ezley Home for the Disturbed in Spirit, and for drifters and squatters (the latter of whom are said not to remain there for very long in any case). The Old City -- especially the old graveyard -- is believed to be haunted, and even Darkside's most wicked elements tend to give the Old City a certain amount of berth.

    (location) Old Well
The Old Well is a long-standing structure in Darkside, and it was long a badly kept secret that it was one entrance to a network of underground tunnels known as the Warrens - kept guarded at all times. It was often a meeting place for those who wished to seek the services of the Assassins' Guild, so when Faraon the Friend wiped out the Assassins' Guild, he sealed up the Old Well as a symbol of his triumph.

    (location) Olympia
    oh-LIM-pee-yah
Nation on the surface of Sinai, in the Nordika Region, on the north side of the continent of Ai. Olympia is located to the south and east of Bosch, east of Kroz, south of Titania and the Wandering Roams, and northwest of the Lake of Langour. Its capitol city, Parthos, is located on the cliffs overlooking the Lake of Langour.

Olympia would be a long-forgotten "backwater" surface country, except for two related factors. First of all, once upon a time, it was a very influential cultural center, to the point where, for a time, Olympian became a major trade language in the region, rivalling the use of Rephidim Standard. Parthos is held by some to be the "birthplace" of the "modern" understanding of how magic works. Second, Parthos is somewhat of a tourist attraction for the wealthy and well-travelled, since its scenic ruins harken back to a bygone era of glory and power.

Olympia is dominated by Katthas, though it also has a large number of Khattas as well. Olympian is the official native language, but Rephidim Standard is also in wide usage -- especially in the capitol city of Parthos.

(organization) (term) Order of Noble and Refined Sky Captains
The Order of Noble and Refined Sky Captains is a brotherhood of airship and naval captains which spans national boundaries, founded by Welathanzaa the Blacktailed. Its members follow a code of honor, its edicts including, among other things, a tradition of the captains dueling (or assigning champions to duel) rather than for their entire ships to engage in bloody ship-to-ship combat.

    (location) Order, Sanctuary of
(Not common information outside of Nordika and Temple circles) The Sanctuary of Order, also known as the Sanctuary of Gears, is an oasis of reality and sanity in the Forbidden Zone region of Bosch, located near its western border with Gallis. A mountain pass road connects the Sanctuary with Gallis, and is the only means of ferrying in the supplies the Sanctuary depends upon -- and the pilgrims who occasionally visit (typically bringing donations and gifts for the pilgrims from afar -- the most prized being books to add to its many libraries).

The structure itself would resemble a great gear, if it could be viewed from above, and is a well-fortified place, built on consecrated grounds, and defended by a dedicated order of monks and mages. The Bronze Lance of the Knights Templar of the Order of the Bounded Star and Anchor is based here, led by the Champion of Order (also known as the Champion of Gears).

    (term) (legend) Overlord
[not common knowledge outside of Nordika]

"Overlords" are believed to be the most powerful entities in the Forbidden Zone of Bosch, and often figure into the mythos of cultures in the Nordikan region. They are deified as dark gods, or -- more often -- demonized in those theologies that center around the "Great Gear" or the "Star".

Some believe that the Overlords are another type of Degenerate ... persons who were once living beings, but who ventured into Bosch. While these Overlords may have been consumed by Bosch and may very well be unable to leave its boundaries, the belief is that these individuals were strong-willed enough to master the wild magicks of Bosch, and to exert their influence over the Imps and Degenerates dwelling there -- making themselves lords with near god-like powers over their limited domain.

It is also believed that some scattered dark societies might actually worship these Overlords as gods, and might actively serve them, seeking the downfall of "mundane" society and the expansion of the wild zone of madness that is Bosch.

    (flora) Pala-Fruit
    PAH-lah
This fruit bearing tree can be found in many varieties in oases of the Himaat and other arid regions. It is distinguishable by having tiny leaves and similarly tiny fruits as well. The trees do not grow in great numbers, and therefore the fruit is fairly rare, since it is a very "finicky" plant if raised outside its natural habitat. Therefore, the fruit of this tree is somewhat rare and is considered mostly a "delicacy" and food of the wealthy.

    (location) Pale, Sea of the
This is one of the three major equatorial oceans of Sinai, the others being the Abaddonian Ocean and the Stygian Sea. It is located between the continents of Ai and Lamu.

    (legend) Pantheon
Although there are many pantheons of gods and goddesses worshipped on Sinai, "The Panthon" typically refers to a number of gods and goddesses of the mythology of the nation of Olympia, in the region of Nordika. The primary members of the Pantheon equal twelve, each one corresponding with a different Sphere of Magic (see Magic, Spheres of), and all of them depicted as felines. These gods consist of:

  • Primus - God of Light; King of the Pantheon; depicted as a lion-Kattha with a flowing, golden mane. Associated with the Sphere of Light (Light, Sphere of).
  • Ariel - Goddess of the Spirit Realm; Messenger of the Gods; depicted as a milky-white Kattha with black hair. Associated with the Sphere of Spirit (Spirit, Sphere of).
  • Morpheus - God of Dreams; traditionally depicted as a grey Kattha, but now depicted as a black, winged Kattha or Khatta. Associated with the Sphere of Dream (Dream, Sphere of).
  • Ashtoreth - Goddess of Love, Fertility, Rain, Water, and of the Oceans; depicted as an idealized, beautiful Kattha, sometimes with green or turquoise head-hair - or even occasionally as a "mercat", having the lower body of a fish. Associated with the Sphere of Water (Water, Sphere of).
  • Sinai - Goddess of Sky, Storms, and Travel; depicted as a flying Kattha, sometimes winged. Associated with the Sphere of Air (Air, Sphere of).
  • Abaddon - God of War and of Fire; depicted as a red-haired or red-furred Kattha, sometimes with tiger stripes. Associated with the Sphere of Fire (Fire, Sphere of).
  • Fortunatis - God of Fortune (Good or Ill) and Wealth; depicted in various ways, usually as a jolly, plump Kattha with strange markings and color. Associated with the Sphere of Chaos (Chaos, Sphere of).
  • Arcadia - Goddess of Life, Healing, Motherhood, Beasts and Agriculture; often depicted as a mother Kattha cradling a kitten. Associated with the Sphere of Life (Life, Sphere of).
  • Logos - God of Knowledge and Wisdom; depicted as a dour, aged Kattha. Associated with the Sphere of Mind (Mind, Sphere of).
  • Behemoth - God of Earth, Mountains, Metalworking, and Woodlands. Typically depicted as a massive tiger, though some older statues depict Behemoth as a tigress. Associated with the Sphere of Earth (Earth, Sphere of).
  • Kasaris - Goddess of the Night. Depicted as a black-furred Kattha, usually in a hooded cloak. Associated with the Sphere of Shadow (Shadow, Sphere of).
  • Dagh - God of the Underworld and Sorcery. Depicted as a black-furred Kattha, traditionally Kasaris' brother. Associated with the Sphere of Illusion (Illusion, Sphere of).
