(not common knowledge outside Babel and religious circles) One of the Sabaoth Seven, and also accepted as one of the original Sabaoth Six -- demon-warriors bound to the service of the ruler of Ashdod as well as the Seven Sisters. Ephasto is depicted as a mutant Eeee with eep-like features, easily the most grotesque of the Sabaoth Seven, with a disjointed, almost comical body characterized by bizarre proportions, a tiny head, and enormous, bugged-out eyes, with a vestigial beak. Ephasto is sometimes associated with Zakaro, though eeps are not particularly sacred to her. He is particularly bizarre in that his sole attack of note is to explode in a burst of bone shrapnel to fight the enemy. (The characters in these tales seem to be completely oblivious to the easy supposition, therefore, that Ephastos isn't going to get out of any battle alive, and if Ephastos shows up in a tale again after making this attack, no explanation is given for his miraculous return.)

"Exile" is the term for an "alien" from another world who has come to Sinai, generally by way of the mysterious Forbidden Zones. It is standard policy of Rephidim that all Exiles must be brought to the Temple for "Processing" -- to teach them the Rephidim common tongue, and to find out what skills and abilities they can offer to Rephidim society. Toward this end, Rephidim has treaties with many cultures, even those who only recognize the airship crews as the "Sky Gods".

The Faceless Ones (also known as "Faceless Men") are secretive intermediaries between the Assassins' Guild and those who would hire their services. They may be whispered of in Darkside on occasion, but very few actually know anything about them. Most of the Faceless Ones do not actually perform assassinations themselves, but there may be some who prefer a more "hands-on" approach. It is quite probable that they have magic users in their ranks (or have some in their employ), for the most noteworthy feature of the Faceless Ones is just how frustratingly hard it is to make out any details of their faces. Anyone who attempts to describe a Faceless One is bound to recall nothing so much as a blur where the face should have been.

Once the seat of power of the country of Stalwirland, the castle of Falcon's Watch is now but a ruin, and not much better than the town by the same name that it overlooks. Located in the mountainous fiefdom of Xanashire, near Half Valley on the continent of Ai, this was once home to the kings of the line of Xante, before the War of the Vassals destroyed the minor kingdom.

Capitol of the nation of Gallis, in Nordika, in the northern part of the continent of Ai. The Marquis of the city of Fauxpas is the de-facto ruler of all Gallis (though Gallis does not formally have anyone who holds the title of "king" or the equivalent).

An apparently new sky island that was first spotted over the frigid Vykarin Wastes of Nordika, in the northern part of the continent of Ai, of size smaller than Rephidim, but still substantial. Like Rephidim, this sky island possesses its own regulated air pressure and temperature, acting as a "permanent weather front", affecting the weather of lands it passes over. It is notable for having a mostly flat surface, save for a large plateau-like mountain in the center with a bowl-shaped valley in its center, filled with various types of vegetation. In recent years, the Order of the Bounded Star and Anchor - the Knight Templar order - has moved its base of operations to this sky island, in a schism with the hierarchy of the Rephidim Temple, from its former base of operations at Golgotha. Fetiss Sky Island is generally attributed as being discovered by the controversial explorer, Bassai of Nijushiho Institute, which prompted him to be granted an even more controversial boon by the Nagai Emperor-Potentate. It has later been revealed that a confrontation occurred between a Knight Templar of the Magenta Lance, Thorn, and Bassai, as the Knight Templar had placed a flag claiming the island for the Rephidim Temple. While the Templar's back was turned, a Nagai doctor accompanying Bassai, by the name of Fetiss, attacked the Templar, biting her neck through a gap in her armor. In the end, both Lancer and Naga died, and Bassai covered up the incident, reporting that they had both been killed by Babelite forces, and having the island named after the deceased Fetiss.

The Sphere of Fire is one of the twelve Spheres of magic recognized by the College Esoterica, its identifying rune being "The Flame", and its mages traditionally dressing in robes of red. Of celestial bodies, the planet of Abaddon is most important to Fire Mages. Fire magic, of course, deals with fire, and, of the various Spheres, is the most potentially powerful in terms of releasing raw, physical force. It can also be particularly dangerous to be around when a spell of a Fire Mage is interrupted, once sufficient energy has been pumped into the ritual. According to Rephidim scholarship, the Sphere of Fire is most closely related, oddly enough, to the dynamic Sphere of Life (Life, Sphere of), and diametrically opposed to the Sphere of Water (Water, Sphere of).

The "First Ones" are believed to have been a race or collection of races who settled on Sinai long ago (millenia or even millions of years ago), and who had an extremely advanced civilization in terms of technology and magic. What became of them is a mystery, but there are still ruins to be found on the surface which are attributed to them. In Rephidim-dominated society, they hold god-like status in the popular mythology, and many pledges are made "by the First Ones".

Fleaufille is a major city in the Nordikan country of Gallis, known for its grand museums, monuments, ballrooms, sculpted gardens, and other sights and sites. For wealthy sight-seers, this is the place to visit in Gallis. It also houses Revolution Park, a square that has enshrined within it a metal-bladed guillotine which figured prominently in the last revolution (Gallis has several), surrounded by neoclassical statues of rulers of times past ... minus their heads.

Flickertails are diminutive flying lizard-like creatures with some insect-like features, such as the antennae on their heads, and their insectoid wings. They are most often seen flitting about bushes, hunting insects. At nighttime, they are especially noticeable, as the tips of their tails glow faintly, just enough to attract insects (or a potential mate), though this phenomenon also attracts predators (such as the Chibix). They are found in wooded areas on all the continents of Sinai, and even on some sky islands.

The term "Flying Khattaman" is basically the Sinai equivalent of a "Flying Dutchman" from Earth lore. In a purely naturalistic sense, it refers to a phenomenon in which, usually during heavy precipitation, a viewer on board a sea-borne vessel will see a reflection of the vessel he or she is on, but, due to angling, it usually appears to be in the air, seeming like a ghostly flying craft. Some air sailors have reported similar phenomena of seeing "ghost airships", which may be attributed to a similar natural phenomenon, or else to various odd effects of Forbidden Zones. This term is also used to refer to an airship that has, for whatever reason, been abandoned and set adrift. Most airships left so abandoned will not stay aloft for very long untended, since the gas will eventually seep out, or else the ship will eventually fall prey to various airborne predators or scavengers -- be they wild animals, or pirates. |
